    Wolf Spider's Intelligence

These days, if you Google "Wolf Spider Intelligence" you get a whole boat load of info. Not like back in the day when this thread kind of started an entire genre of science. Dr. Wu

Women, Endurance, FKTs in the Paper of Record

?? Or that typically a lot of 100 mile races are obscure and post very small and undiverse entry fields. If you look at the larger 100's (Leadville, Vermont, Western States) you have a lot more predictable finishing rates and positions for men and women that you'd find in a marathon or any other...

Exploring Moriah Gorge (Was "Reading about Hawthorne Falls")

I remember running into a bouldery area shortly after leaving the trail near where Franconia Brook Trail meets the GRT and said F'k it and went back to the trail. I'd like to get back to some of these interesting areas but with a newborn at home, that ain't happenin anytime soon. I've been...

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

I agree with Kevin. Also, give me a break on the whole "wilderness" aspect. The whole of the Whites was logged to death just 100 years ago and the region is bisected with highways including a major interstate. The bridge in question is a few miles from the Kanc. In fact, the bridge is a mile or...

    Fatal Hiking Accident in NH

Very Sad. I used to buy bread from her at the Northampton Farmer's Market and we'd chat about trail running and whatnot in the area. Nice lady and a such a shame. -Dr. Wu

    Mt Holyoke foliage

Most of the Mt. Holyoke range is not even turning yet. The oak trees on Mt. Tom across the river are starting to turn but Mt. Holyoke (at least what I see on the North side every day) is 98% green. The surrounding countryside is about 10 days away from peak foliage, however. -Dr. Wu

    Pemi loop

The marathon (26.2), Ironman (140.6), Ultramarathon (100) stickers are generally pretty unadorned and obvious. If you want to replicate that effect, a simple "Pemi Loop" in an oval would suffice. -Dr. Wu

Fimbulvetr - The next thing in snowshoes?

Can anyone find any specs on surface area? weight? They look like running snowshoes to me ... I'd be interested in them for tooling around some of the local stuff by me like Mt. Tom. -Dr. Wu

    Northeast’s Fastest Known Times

    Hancock-Captain-Carrigain Traverse 11.03.12

My name apparently pops up in random pictures... when I finally get to the summit of the Captain I won't even have to sign the log. Pretty awesome trip and some great pictures. I almost wish I could have been there! The hike up Carrigain from the pond was, as you mentioned, easy and fun. Some...

Hiker reported bitten by copperhead snake on Mt. Tom (Western Mass not NH)

I think it was verified as being a copperhead. My guess if the guy was bit by a rattler he wouldn't have had it in him to chop the head off. Probably got a "warning bite" from the copperhead... poor dude got his head cut off. It wasn't even on the peak, apparently it happened near the trailhead...

    Bears are back in Connecticut

I work in Windsor CT (pretty much central CT) about 10' from I-91 and we pretty routinely have bears walking right by the facility. I don't know if it's the same one each time (because co-workers see them or they're just seen on the security camera) but co-workers will oftentimes come in and...
