Mike Pelchat retiring as Manager of Mt Washington State Park

There are some folks who live and work in these hill whose collective knowledge simply cannot be quantified. Learned a ton from Mike during my time at the Observatory...doubt there will ever be anyone like him up there again.

Your Top Ten Photos of 2014!

The end of the calendar year is always a great time to reflect upon all of the hikes we've done and places we've been in 2014! The quality of pictures we can get from our cell phones and other small cameras has never been greater, allowing us to almost always be ready to capture the moment. I...

    Wood Lilies?

Wood lilies are my favorite summer wildflower, and I'm looking to include them into some of my landscape photographs this summer. I know of a few lower peaks around the White Mountains where they grow and have landscape photographic potential, but I'm curious if anyone else has seen any...

What camera(s) are you using to photograph wild flowers?

No problem...I actually wrote a blog a few years ago comparing the two lenses... http://www.jimsalge.net/Blog/?p=137

What camera(s) are you using to photograph wild flowers?

Also, if you don't have a dedicated macro lens, you can get a reversing ring, and try this technique: http://www.nephotographyguild.com/category/macro/

What camera(s) are you using to photograph wild flowers?

I use a canon SLR camera, with two dedicated macro lenses. My Canon 50mm Macro is ultra sharp, and capable of producing 1:2 reproduction, but the working distance is small. I can add manual focus extension tubes in to get this lens to 1:1 reproduction, but the working distance puts the lens...

    2014 Spring Wildflower Thread

We're off to a bit of a late start this year, and it's threatening to be very late in some areas. Ice flowing down the river this morning, a foot of snow in the yard in SeNH, three feet around the base of Chocorua last weekend...and no sign of the crocuses or skunk cabbage...

Your Top Ten Photos of 2013!

I didn't get out hiking as much as I usually do this year...as my wife and I welcomed our first into the world, and I stayed closer to home in SoNH rather than go up to the mountains every weekend. In time, I'll return more often and look forward to introducing her to the hills! Here's my...

Your Top Ten Photos of 2013!

It's almost time to turn the calendar and turn to the new year, and it's a great time to reflect upon all of the wonderful places we've been in 2013! Many of us take our camera along with us when we hike, and the quality of small cameras, and the accessibility to cameras has never been...

Your Top Ten Photos of 2012!

What incredible shots in this thread! I didn't end up hiking as much in 2012 as I have in past years, and many of the hikes I did go on turned out not to be too photogenic. Early in the year, I made three sunset ascents of Cherry Mountain/Owls Head, looking for light, and never getting...

Your Top Ten Photos of 2012!

Around this time every year, we begin to recap and recall the year in hiking, and reflect upon all of the wonderful places we've been. Many of us take our camera along with us, and capture special moments. These may be aestetically beautiful, or capture something with a special meaning. I...

Stinky Bugs on Washington's Summit Cone in June

I worked on Washington for a while last decade, and the stink bugs were there for a week every summer. They were there long before the invasive ones getting all the press this year. I always assumed they were native...but never researched it...but I know they predate the new invasion!

    2012 Spring Wildflower Thread

Bloodroot and Spring Beauty... The parade of way to early flowers continues. Though certainly not yet abundant, the spring beauty is blooming on the Lamprey River Floodplain in SoNH. About two weeks early... Also found skunk cabbage in bloom, helebore leaves emerging, and am off to find...
