    Sad News

Very sad news. I had the privilege of hiking with Dennis a couple of times many years ago. He truly was the quintessential nice guy. Rest in peace.

    What's Your Go-To Summer Daypack?

Osprey Stratos 24, saw an ad on Craigslist a few years ago and drove over an hour to pick it up in Maine for $50....3 years old but brand new, guy had bought it but never used it. Best pack I've ever owned.

    Acadia Vacation - April 20-23, 2021

Heading there in late June....my wife only does short hikes so I probably will wake up early on at least one day to do a bigger hike before she's up.

    Odd Coincidence on Wildcat

Ed's a great guy. The only time I hiked with him was on a Twins/Galehead hike, and coincidentally, there was a Boston Globe reporter and photographer along that day to write a story on his grid adventures...

North and South Kinsman via Lonesome Lake, Fishin' Jimmy and Kinsman Ridge trails

Nice report, I've been to North Kinsman 4 or 5 times, twice in winter, but have only went to South Kinsman once in winter. That last section up to North Kinsman from the junction with the Mt Kinsman trail is pretty steep and can be "interesting" if it's icy. As for the rest of the hikes you...

    North Brother

I was there this August too, did the Coe/Brothers loop, and also couldn't believe the condition of that last section up to North Brother. We heard that this section of trail is going to be re-routed, but I don't know what the timetable is (nor do I know how reliable that info is about a re-route).

Peak Bragging 2016! The Year in Review - Tell us your stories!

I finished the NE67 this year...wasn't sure I'd ever finish (or care to!) after finishing the NH48 in 2009, but with some encouragement from my friend Joe (JustJoe), together we got all the remaining Maine 4Ks done, then finished up the ones in VT...last hike was Camel's Hump.

Does this seem reasonable? Middle, North and South Carter on the 21st.

I was almost going to say that too - at least if Imp trail isn't broken out or only partially-broken, they'd discover that early in the day when they have more energy, and they can deal with it better - or turn back if it's too tough.

Does this seem reasonable? Middle, North and South Carter on the 21st.

One thing to consider with loop hikes in the winter is that you're facing unknown (and potentially difficult) conditions on the way out, unless you have very recent trail conditions info, with no weather changes since the report was posted. At least with an out-and-back hike, you'll see what...

    Ellen/Abraham...VT

I believe the info on Mohammed's site (which has been very valuable to me over the years) is incorrect when it says 1600' to do the out and back from Lincoln Gap. Obviously Tim's GPS info backs this up. Another reason I'm doubting it: the info on this page says that to do Abraham alone via...

Thanks, good to have this info - I'm doing this hike with Joe. Got my two headlamps as usual and will bring plenty of water. Sounds like the out-and-back is the best option.

    North Twin 2/4/16

Took a day off and hiked with GarryG to North Twin Parked at end of Little River Road and followed bushwhack to summer trailhead and then herd path to 3rd crossing of Little River. Wore Microspikes the entire hike - they were needed even on the initial bushwhack section that leads to the...

    Carter Notch In Winter

I agree with TJsName...you could ascend Carter Dome trail and hit Carter Dome via Zeta Pass. Then double back and head towards South Carter and Middle Carter. The mileage and elevation gain for this route is almost the same as if you hit Carter Dome via the hut. I hear you on the winter...

Killington via the Bucklin Trail in winter

I could easily do some research on this but I'm lazy....how much of this hike is exposed? I'm doing this hike with Joe, and it's supposed to be pretty windy Saturday, I want to make sure Joe is prepared...I like to look out for the safety of my elders. :D

    Spring Conditions

Those were exactly the conditions found on Mt Crawford this past Thursday. No real visibly-defined monorail, but it was more solid in the center, if you could manage to pay attention enough to stay there.

8/26/14 Lamprey River to Great Bay

Yes it was a good time. Thanks for your advice (from last year) about the timing of when to go out on the bay - you advised going out in a 4-hour window around high tide. Very helpful and made me feel safer when taking one of my kids out.

8/26/14 Lamprey River to Great Bay

The day before my 16-year-old son Jason went back to school, I went out on a kayaking trip from downtown Newmarket and out to Great Bay. Conditions were great - very hot and very calm, since we we on the bay right before high tide. We went as far as Vols Island; I had thought of going up to...
