Anyone Been In The Presidentials This Weekend?

I did the Pierce to Eisenhower loop yesterday (up Crawford Path to Pierce and Eisenhower, descended via Edmands Path and walked out Mt Clinton Rd.). Crawford Path to Pierce was packed solid, traction helpful in a couple spots. Crawford path to Eisenhower, Edmands, and most of Mt Clinton Rd...

Sometimes I just have to wonder what people are thinking

I went up Lafayette on 12/26. The temperature wasn't bad, but the wind was howling. From the hut to the summit, the wind was strong enough that I had to lean into it. A few gusts were so strong I had to take a knee and wait for it to pass. On my way back down, two guys were just starting up...

2010: year of the deer fly?

homemade trap Based on the info linked in this post, I bought some Tanglefoot and made the trap seen below. It's effective, but you'll definitely get some looks from passersby :D

Trek to a Prehistoric NH Volcano, and to a Pond with a Prehistoric Feel (July 2010)

Cool! We recently moved to Maidstone VT, just past Guildhall, and we have a nice view of Cape Horn. I've been wanting to go explore up there, but I just haven't had the time.

2010: year of the deer fly?

No, however, I did lose my cap a couple of times. When I would bend down, it kept sticking to the taller plants. Maybe I'll just shave my head and put the patches right on my scalp . . . cleanup would be tricky though :D

2010: year of the deer fly?

I put some transparent fly tape (from Home Depot . . . it's meant to be stuck on windows) on the top and back of my baseball hat last night when I went out to weed the garden. It worked like a charm; I had three deerflies stuck to my cap in less than 10 minutes. I haven't tried the blue cup...

canadian wildfire smoke choking the whites...

It's still pretty strong in Lebanon NH. Up on the hill at DHMC, the haze is so thick you can't see much past Velvet Rocks. The air intake is pumping it inside the lab . . . it smells like an Islay scotch in here :)

    Most comfortable sleeping pads

Now *THAT* looks like a sweet pad. It might be nicer than my mattress at home! I think I'll get vetoed on the price though. Thanks for all the input everybody! This forum is truly awesome :) I think I'll go with the Big Agnes Air Core for now. It seems to be well-liked, and the price is...

    Most comfortable sleeping pads

What's the most comfortable and cushy sleeping pad out there? I don't care how heavy or bulky it is, so long as it fits in a pack. I've searched the threads and I haven't found what I'm looking for . . . I apologize if this has already been covered in another thread. I sleep on my side, and...

    WMNF Forest Road Status

Does anybody know if Ravine Lodge Road is still closed? The WMNF site lists it as closed, but the lodge opens in a few weeks and I assumed the road would open by now . . . or soon. I sent an email to the DOC, but I haven't heard back yet. EDIT: Nevermind, I just got a reply. They expect to...

winter excercise: hacking up nasty stuff after?

I get this after intense exercise, regardless of the season, but it does seem to be worse in the winter. I've had asthma since I was a kid though, so it may have something to do with it. "Intense exercise" is probably a relative term. For me, it's running more than a few minutes, or a...

Fatality from falling in spruce traps

Just out of curiosity, I did a google image search for "spruce trap." There seems to be a few VFTTers that made the first page of hits :)

    A steep and cheap oops!

Even if you're logged in, you still need to enter your password in the checkout screen. Type your password somewhere in plain text, then copy it to the clipboard. Then you can just paste it in (right-click + "paste") to the password field on the checkout screen. That will help speed up the...

    A steep and cheap oops!

There's a Vista gadget too (works with Windows 7 also). I've found that it doesn't update/refresh as often as I'd like. It seems to take a minute to catch up with the current item on the site. (Scored the $1 Kavu fleece yesterday :D )

    The arrival of hunting season

I had to look it up, so if you don't know who's on first, what's on second, or which "WMU" is where, here is a link to the WMU map (PDF).

    Who does trail work?

I'm over 5 days this year, so far. I could probably finish most of the basic work in 4-5 days, but like bryan, I have a long hike to get to my section of trail (Garfield Ridge from Lafayette to Garfield Trail). I also tend to take long lunch breaks and just enjoy my surroundings. It's the...
