Sharing the woods with black bears

thank you so much all of you for your replies. I do tend to hike solo and to be honest, as a woman, I am more afraid of two-legged animals than four-legged. One of the things I love about hiking solo and later in the day/evening is the difference in the woods - the sounds are different- it...

Sharing the woods with black bears

It's sort of ironic that my name here is mommabear but I have a question regarding bears. When I hiked the 46, I ran into a bear on Big Slide on my way down. I was hiking solo and it was later in the afternoon. The bear and I had a conversation and he eventually left. When I decided to go...

    ADK backpacking/ peakbagging suggestions

You might want to try the Sewards Range although I'm not clear if that's what you're up to. They have some good lean-to camping there. Another possibility is the Dix range where you can be one of the first to climb Grace Peak. I save Marcy for my last too. Good luck.

    Catskill 3500

Hi Ed, I'll keep my eye open for ADK Long Island chapter hikes. I belong to Albany ADK and I know Long Island is pretty active! Thanks.

    Catskill 3500

Thanks Jay. Those are some good leads. I'll follow up on both.

    Catskill 3500

Wow!! It's been a long time since I've posted on this site! I'm a 46er and now want to complete my Catskill 35. I'm getting help with scheduled hikes from ADK but would like to hike with others instead of hiking solo with the rest. Any suggestions of how to conquer the 35 and/or who else I...

    So, Is "the Split" Working?

I like the new forum. As a resident New Yorker, it was hard to find current info that related to my area. The ADKs and the Catskills mean a lot to us that have walked through so much of them.

bears are still out; hunters are done

I've heard the same thing - black bears don't go into true hibernation and often get up for short periods of time throughout the winter.

    Forest Mystery

If it was in my backyard, I would say somebody's neighborhood cat, but since you were in a more wooded area, I would also guess it was likely a red-tailed hawk. They're pretty prevalent in the Northeast and like to hunt on the "smaller" birds.

    snow shoes manatory?

I got my LL Bean catalog yesterday and they sell snowshoes. I know some of the higher priced stores like EMS would say that they're poor quality but was wondering if anybody's had any experience with some of their stuff.

    Mount Marcy and fall foliage...

I agree that generally by now, the foliage in the Adirondacks has peaked, but this year they seem to be a little slower than usual. Still, the weather and the scenery is especially unpredictable in the High Peaks this time of year. I can remember a few years back hiking Colden in a snow storm...

    Moose Sighting Near Vroman's Nose

A moose was definitely hit on the Thruway this morning. I saw it up here in Albany. It's on its way to Delmar. That's it in the picture. I recognize the bone in its back hoof. Encon thinks it probably swam across the Hudson. Too bad. It was only about two years old too.

    Hking by myself

No matter what you think of guns, I would think that since most hiking is done on government-owned lands, there's likely to be a lot restrictions about whether or not you can carry a gun with you legally - even if you have a pistol permit. I know in New York State, they're very strict.

    Which down jacket to buy?

I know you didn't mention it as one of your three options, but ever since Primaloft, I haven't bought anything down. The jackets are really light and not as "puffy" as down. They're just as warm but have the added benefit of keeping their insulation qualities when they get wet.

    Hking by myself

I'm a woman and I hike by myself sometimes too. My biggest fear is not four-legged animals but two-legged ones. Sometimes, I carry pepper spray in case I have a problem but have never had to use it. In this area, there are virtually no wild animals to be that afraid of - just a few that you...

    Get mildew smell out?

Sounds like the tent's shot. Even if your friend managed to get some of the smell out, the tent won't perform as well. My vote is to get a new one too.

    Have You Ever Defended Hiking?

I kind of like my loose screws. I think they're one of the best things about me. :)

    Bad reaction to wick socks.

I'm a strong believer in using sock liners - especially if you have a hard boot like new leather. When I first began mountain climbing at the age of 14, I hiked for a few weeks straight and came out with the deepest blisters on the inside of my heels. I still have scars from it now and it's...

    Hiking Allen Solo?

I say, go for it. It's not a hard climb, but it is a longer one, so you should bring a headlamp. I would suggest getting a copy of Barbara McMartin's book, but it's really not a bad hike at all. It wasn't that long ago that Allen was a bear of a climb because of all the blow-down, but that's...

How do you get off from work?

I've been tempted to call in sick for a hiking day, but I'm always too afraid that that would be THE day that I injury myself and/or get lost in the woods, can't get out on my own, have to be rescued, and make the evening news - while my boss watches how I spend my "sick day."
