    Sad News

Wow! I had no idea his health was failing. Dennis will be missed for sure since he was probably the person who posted the most in the forum to engage conversations. I met him by accident on a peak when I was in Baxter and found him to be informative, charming and passionate about our beloved...

    Post-knee replacement hiking ?

Thanks for sharing your journey. Since my recovery is so screwed up I'm lost regarding my own personal journey to recovery going forward so it's good to know what to expect more or less. Luckily my PT guy is working on his 4,000 footers and hikes so his advice will be helpful. Undergoing the...

    Post-knee replacement hiking ?

Good information. I had TKR on my right knee 8 weeks ago and ended up as one of the 3% with excessive scar tissue making if very difficult to bend or straighten my knee. I had this problem right after surgery...not sure if had something to do with how my responded or something the doctor did...

how much fun are group hikes?

I like hiking solo and doing group hikes. I've done all the lists and peaks many times over. I'm usually the leader and I enjoy taking the role of being the "tour guide." My groups hover around 10. I have both familiar faces/friends and newbies attending. Everyone is super friendly, I enjoy...

    White Mountains Trail Collective?

I was always curious about how WMTC were so good at getting grants, now we know the real story. As a financial auditor, I can't help but place some fault with the Board of Directors for not having someone independently review the bank statements monthly. It looks like an annual audit made the...

    Gene Daniel Has Passed Away

Thanks for sharing this great picture of Gene in his younger days. Brings back a lot of good memories and how he got me started in hiking.

    Trouble on the Ridge (again).

Friends of mine were hiking down Falling Waters and saw the couple hiking up. It was 90 degrees down here that day...saw that all they had for water was a 12 ounce water bottle and asked if they had any more water...they replied that is all they had. Seeing the entire troupe with them, strongly...

    SAR Discussion -

Thanks so much for sharing your story. Most people in your situation would not have the guts to share such a story and ask for feedback on top of that! I can tell it's something that haunts you to this day. I think we can always second guess ourselves with something like this to eternity. I...

Hal Graham (Trailwrights, BRATTS founder) has passed away.

I met Hal and his wife Peggy way back when he founded Trailwrights with an initial focus on the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail. He impacted me with the importance of trail maintenance where I eventually became a trail adopter. We'll miss you Hal.

Mr Pizza in Gorham is Closing (Now Reopened under new owners)

I'm happy that Mr. Pizza will be re-opening...either under that name or another. I really don't care if it's run by Sunday River Brewing Company. The restaurant will be inspected like any other. I loved eating on the outdoor back deck watching the Androscoggin River flowing by. I'm sure the food...

    Shipwreck of Shackleton’s Endurance found

I can see this as the beginning of a Shackleton movie just like the Titanic! This survival story is still inspiring after more than 100 years!

Winter Hiking Season over before it started.

That is so true! I'm not sure why ortho docs don't say that more often. I've lost 15 pounds and my knees/ankles are thanking me for it. Would like to lose 5 more. :)

Winter Hiking Season over before it started.

Bummer PB! Wishing you a speedy recovery. For what it's worth, I've had major ankle surgery and I'm still hiking away!!!

    Acadia National Park, September 2021

Sounds like you had an awesome trip! We spent a few days in Bar Harbor as well with hikes up the Precipice and Beehive. The swells from Hurricane Larry pounding the Acacia National Park coastline was incredible! We too ate at the Chart Room each night with delicious seafood, outstanding service...

    Roaming around BSP

It was a pleasure to meet you and Jazzbo unexpectedly on the summit of Doubletop! Will do better with tracking your posts. I started a local hiking group [Pemi Valley Hikers] for the Lincoln, Plymouth and Laconia region if anyone is interested in joining!

    More trail closings?

Stony Trails I remember the days when the trails had a comfortable bed versus all the rocks now appearing due to erosion making it more difficult for these 'older' legs...LOL. In another 20 years, we'll just be hiking on rocks, leading to more injuries due to sprained ankles, etc. There may be...

worth a new "Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites" thread ?

I'll add my vote for Mr. Pizza. Great variety to choose from the menu, craft beers and I really enjoy eating out on the outside deck with the Androscoggin flowing by!

    Gene Daniel Has Passed Away

From his son: RIP Eugene S. Daniell III, 5/31/47-12/11/19. My Dad passed this evening after gradually deteriorating health for several years. No doubt, he would have rather gone out with his Limmer’s on. When I think back, his happiest years were when he was active in hiking, from AMC WMG...

Glacier National Park. And others out west.

I was also surprised how far Glacier was booked when I was planning on a 10 day hiking vacation back in September 2017, so yes this is correct. We were forced to rent a VRBO property which ended up working just fine!

    Mt Tecumseh Elevation Article

I think there comes a point in time where tradition starts to kick in instead of precision. It's been 48 peaks since 1987. Before that, I can understand the need for precision. I can also understand precision as to where the actual highest point is, for example, on Owl's Head. I've hiked all...
