    Mount Ascutney

I don't recall any obvious trail that continues on. I didn't know there was supposed to be one so I wasn't looking for it though. The obvious trail just dead ends at that dropoff. I'll have to check it out next time I'm there.

    Caribou Valley Road

Just a note: the road is now blocked off at the metal bridge but is in very good condition up to that point. Even a lower clearance vehicle could make it without too much trouble (my Outback had no issues). AT southbound to Abraham is in pretty good shape, albeit a bit muddy in spots. The...

    Adirondacks vs The Catskills

The Catskills are probably worth visiting at least once just to experience something a little bit different. That said, after doing ~20 peaks there I personally have zero desire to spend any more time in the Cats. There's better mountains to be had.

Seeking advice on how to pack for "light and fast" hiking

My opinions - specific to multi-day trips (different from day hikes): I actually have an old post that detailed everything I carried on two longer backpacks in the Sierras if you are interested. http://dunbarsm.wordpress.com/2010/08/04/hiking-by-the-numbers/#comments Weights for those trips...

Apparently I suck at adding links. Corrected and should take you to the article now.

Five hikers rescued from High Peaks

The article in your link misses the best, and most hilarious, part: "As it grew dark, temperatures dipped into the 40s and rain began falling. The group tried to keep warm by urinating on each other, they told rescuers. The technique is not a standard survival technique and apparently provided...

    Whiteface, Passaconaway, Hedgehog, Tecumseh

So the big rock wasn't the actual summit?

    Whiteface, Passaconaway, Hedgehog, Tecumseh

It was a lazy start to the day as I rolled out of bed at 7 AM and headed over to the bakery for a bagel and just-out-of-the-oven raspberry muffin. So it was 9:30 by the time I started walking toward the Blueberry Ledge trail to Whiteface mountain. This is the Whiteface mountain in the southern...

Easily accessible, must-see destination in the Adirondacks

This is also an excellent recommendation. Being able to see the sprawling lake country and the High Peaks from the same summit is pretty cool. And it can be done in just a few hours.

Easily accessible, must-see destination in the Adirondacks

My favorite hike for someone new to the Adirondacks is still Gothics via Pyramid. It gives you some steep climbs, a 360° view from the summit, and some great views of the unique Adirondack slides from Pyramid. If you want some short hikes for a quick morning/afternoon, I'd recommend Noonmark...

    Hiking in Montana

Definitely check out the Anaconda-Pintler wilderness - it is just north of Little Bighorn. It's a great section of mountains that gets very little attention so you don't get many crowds. Here's pics from the two hikes I did there: Goat Flat West Pintler Peak

Grand Canyon End of April into May

I was there this time of year back in 2008. Don't remember any bugs, just lizards and snakes. There were still wildflowers around that year too.

    Peakbagger spreadsheet!

This is a silly spreadsheet I made for people who like peakbagging and statistics - I'm sure there's some of them hanging around here... >> Download here! << What does it do? It's an excel spreadsheet I made that can be used to record your hikes and track your progress on multiple...

Driving cross country, looking for route suggestions for views

Driving through the Tetons is beautiful. Route 20 west of Idaho Falls is also pretty nice as you pass a lot of Idaho mountain ranges. I haven't done Route 20 into Oregon, but from what I know of the area I wouldn't expect much from it (I believe it is desert similar to the east side of...

Madison to Monroe on 3-17-12 for 2 W48 finishes

Good to see you again and congrats! Cory and I were in the woods below Jackson at sunset so we missed it. Glad you got to enjoy it - always a good way to end a hike!
