    Winter nh 48 canine finishers

I forgot this thread was here - my previous dog Hannah (who was a W48 and grid finisher) passed away June 2019. I adopted Maddie December 2019 and she finished her W48 on Jefferson on 1/21/23.

    Dry River

I hiked the Mt. Eisenhower trail in late August and it was in good shape, a bit brushy in a few short sections but no issues following it. I hiked a loop of Mt. Clinton trail, Dry River Cutoff and Dry River trail in late September (after the Mt. Clinton trail had received some much needed TLC...

No, pet dogs are not allowed in Baxter State Park.

Agreed - lack of formal legislation has led to gray areas and problems for the people that truly need a service animal. Also I've never seen people who have an honest service dog (and a true need for them) flaunting pictures of the "special privileges" their dog gets on social media - those...

    Wildcat, Winter and Dogs

I hiked them 12/27/15 when there was some decent ice but no real snow yet, not sure how relevant this will be but will give a quick synopsis anyways - we went up 19 MB and down the ski area (made it to D just after the ski area closed and Polecat wasn't even open because of lack of snow) - there...

Lost: dog leash between Zeacliff and Bondcliff Saturday 5/23

Heavy duty black dog leash with green/black poop bag holder attached, lost somewhere between Zeacliff and Bondcliff on Saturday 5/23 - most likely fell out of a pack so should be pretty close to the trail - if found please PM me - thanks!

    Pet Friendly places to stay

Johnson's Motel in Twin Mountain is pet friendly, clean, decent rates (small extra fee for dogs) and very friendly owners - have stayed there a number of times and would definitely recommend them.

    Hiking In Ireland

My husband and I went to Ireland in October for our honeymoon and had a fabulous time! I second a drive around the Ring of Kerry and Killarney National Park. We didn't have time to hike to the Gap of Dunloe but from a distance it totally reminded both of us of Franconia Notch :) The Cliffs of...

    Lost GPS Carter-Moriah trail 8/23

During our traverse yesterday I lost my Garmin GPS on the Carter-Moriah trail some where between Moriah and Carter Dome - if found please email me, I can give a detailed description - much thanks! Hikes with Hannah [email protected]

    Owls Head higher summit

It seems like a pretty superficial carving so hopefully once a layer or two of birch bark is shed it shouldn't really be visible anymore ...

    Owls Head higher summit

I was just there this past weekend - the cairn is good-sized and definitely bigger than when I was up there in April. Someone also carved "O.H. TOP" into a birch tree at face level on the right just before entering the small summit clearing.

    Winter nh 48 canine finishers

Correct, she finished yesterday 3/8/14. Thanks Ed!

    Winter nh 48 canine finishers

Hannah finished her winter 48 (and her 5th round!) today on Mt. Adams. Of course she's happy hiking anywhere and doesn't care about lists, but I'm very very proud of my hiking beast!

    The 20 best cold-weather dogs

Hannah will hopefully finish this year (43/48 so far) and she loves snow but isn't exactly built for very cold weather - lean but muscular with a short dense coat. She wears two coats in winter and I check her feet several times during hikes. I feel a lot of dogs can be good winter hikers and...

Recommendations for Strongest Collapsing Trekking Poles?

I've used the Black Diamond trekking poles for a number of years now - my knees are much happier and I've never had them collapse unexpectedly. Fell on one awkwardly coming down Brutus Bushwhack a few winters ago and it just about broke in half - REI replaced it for free even though it wasn't a...

    Mt. Moosilauke 11/6/12

Via Gorge Brook Trail, Snapper Trail and Carriage Road All of these trails are in very good shape, only three significant blowdowns - one easy step-over and one tricky duck-under on Carriage Road, plus one big leaner on upper Gorge Brook. Just a dusting of snow at the trailhead, increased to...

Setting Things Straight: An Easy Backpack 8/24-25/12

Absolutely stunning pictures, and glad to see Emma's doing well and back on the trail!

Bears, Dogs & Guns at West Hartford, CT location popular with runners and hikers

http://www.boston.com/news/local/connecticut/articles/2012/07/18/mdc_says_it_wont_cite_dog_owner_who_shot_at_bear/ Sounds like the dog was actually injured by the bear according to this article - sadly not a good outcome for the dog though :( Hannah and I used to walk and hike in that area...

    Owlshead and Mt. Martha, 7/14/12

Via Owl's Head Trail, Martha's Mile and Cherry Mountain Rd. Great hike despite the hot humid weather - we started on route 115 and hike south to Old Cherry Mountain Rd. First mile or so is fairly easy, but after the last stream crossing the trail becomes fairly steep and unrelenting up to...

Globe article on hikers relying on GPS units in smartphones

Was just about to post this article but it's already here - nice to see them encouraging people not to be stupid and to do a bit more thinking and planning ahead of time so we won't read about their rescue later.

Moriah via Stony Brook Trail 5/26/12

Out and back via Stony Brook Trail and Carter-Moriah Trail Overall trails in good shape, no major issues to speak of - mud in the usual areas on the ridge but easily navigated around. Bugs didn't make an appearance until the descent - breezy enough on the ridge to keep them away, but they were...
