National Geographic: Remains of Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine believed to have been found on Everest

My first response was skepticism for many of the same reasons. But now, waiting for confirmation.

AMC Huts - What Happens If Weather Is Unsafe For Travel?

We got a credit (not a refund) when a tropical storm came through. Next time we had to cancel the second day on a 2 day hut stay we did not get a credit. For me it’s worth the risk.

    (Another) New AMC Logo!

A trend? Looks pretty similar to the new AMC logo.

    Clingmans Dome is now Kuwohi

Not the worst state high point I’ve visited. Before they “modernized” Mt Sassafras SC, we were met with a cell tower lying next to the USGS marker. PA had graffiti and a damaged summit spike; MS and KY we’re equally unimpressive.

    VA hiking

if you haven’t already been there, Mount Rogers is the geographical high point of Virginia. Not a spectacular summit by any means but if you start at Massie Gap, head up to the Appalachian Trail and turn left, you’ll be on the Grayson Highlands. The summit trail is off the AT. Up and back,it’s...

Peakbagger - In remembrance July 2024

My condolences to his family. He helped to shape my hiking throughout the years and I will miss his wisdom!

Lydia finishes the 4K list - 4 years old editted

I had to bribe my two grandkids with candy and gifts to get them to summit. It was clearly about what I wanted them to accomplish. I started this practice after polling other parents to see how they got kids to reach the top. Not every kid is dying to get to the top!

Lydia finishes the 4K list - 4 years old editted

Not a fan of real little legs making it up ALL 48 and there’s no way a small child is doing it because they want to complete the list. Little kids don’t make those decisions. I typically don’t share my views on this - don’t want the pushback.

    Appalachia Parking

It’s great when you can share your passion with those you love, and they “catch the bug.” For years we dragged our Tampa grandson to the huts. As he grew, so did his athleticism and appreciation for his trips to NH, a place unknown to most if not all of his friends. Two years ago he announced...

    Appalachia Parking

Thank you - we are going to shoot for 7:30. Although it’s a Wednesday, it will be a holiday week. Fourth of July.

    Appalachia Parking

In two weeks, I’ll be taking the gkids for a night at Madison Spring Hut and hopefully a summit hike or two. What is the parking situation? We plan to be there at 8 am on a Wednesday. The shuttle isn’t an option right now. If the lot is full, do cars park on the street? I’d rather not, but...

Its that time of the year - Renew NH Hike Safe Card

I had the honor of being the first to purchase the card years ago, just before rollout. I worked at DES, next door to F&G on Hazen Drive and wound up connected with the person in charge of the launch (discussing another matter), so I asked to be first. The Tampa grandkids have been "persuaded"...

NY hiker clung to tree above Adirondack cliff after sliding hundreds of feet

My number one nightmare concerning winter peakbagging. Probably why I'm just 13/48 in NH!

North Woods Law of lost Pemi Loop Hiker

Worked for DES for years and as we were representative of a State of NH agency, the majority of us refrained from publicly commenting on media articles and voicing contrary opinions during events and presentations to the public. It was never an issue for me and I too, am happy to support F&G in...

North Woods Law of lost Pemi Loop Hiker

Anyone know the episode number? I may have missed it in the comments. I love this show, reminds me of home, but there are some episodes where not much goes on (the raccoon finds his own way out of the basement, the hiker made his own way down) and if I knew which episode I could get to the...

    HikeSafe card usage

Me too for the same reasons. I was the very first to purchase the card years ago ( I asked to be).

    Ageism or Irresponsibility?

As a hike leader in my community (and someone in her 60s), my first thought when I heard where he was hiking was of his age. I’m being honest - not judgy. I have folks in their 70s and a few in their 80s hiking with me and they are good company - grateful to be still doing it. But my routes are...

The Ammonoosuc Ravine trail is closed

Curious if it's still closed. I don't see any mention of it on the Forest Service webpage. I live out of the area now and took family for a week in the Whites last week. Feeling VERY lucky we enjoyed great weather!
