    Wolf Spider's Intelligence

A specialist in this "genre of science", one scientist concentrated on studying the lice that bothered some wolf spiders. He and his assistant would collect these lice and put each one in separate test tubes to be analyzed later ... some they put in a refrigerator for future experimenting ...

I won the Wonderland Trail lottery

My wife and I visited four national parks in Feb 2020 - White Sands, Carlsbad, Guadalupe Mountains and Big Bend. Nice trip. Guadalupe Peak has much in common with Mount Lafayette - great views, large crowds (two hours or so from big cities), several pack-less hikers in sneakers or sandals...

We did some fun trails in Acadia over the long weekend.

Glad to hear about the caves. I had heard of them and tried to find them a few years ago. I went with my leashed dog (no leash = dog gone) up the Giant Slide trail from its trailhead. But we reached a point where Buddy couldn't go any further - probably just below any caves - and we wound up...

    Carter Dome and Wild River

I did see one metal marker - thin-but-stiff, bent almost flat on itself, the bent end embedded in a tree at about 6 feet off the ground. I saw part of two numbers on it and did not imagine it would be a mile marker. Thanks for doing a trail adoption. Of the two blazes I did see - one was a...

    Carter Dome and Wild River

First trip in years - and first with trekking poles. I'm definitely a convert. I could *not* have completed this hike without them - relying completely on them for stream crossings. Also felt secure with my Stabils (poor-man's micro spikes). Parked at the lot at the end of Carter Notch Road -...

    Tomcat's top 5 Maine hikes

#1 I've done the Knife Edge and Hamlin, but two separate trips. #2 You omitted Penobscot from your list. I did a variation of your Acadia trip west to east, only getting the 1,000 footers. And, no, I did not descend the Precipice! instead taking the ridge south, including a dip in The Bowl...

    1000-footers in Acadia

bjc - absolutely and without question. Can't say enough good things about the bus service. We've enjoyed the free buses for years. The emphasis is on a cleaner environment, but the convenience factor is huge too. And they're free! Most (or all?) can load a couple or few bicycles as well...

    Bushwhacks in Acadia

Ethical bushwhacking? Caveat #1: this will probably sound self-defensive, but I honestly want to know differing viewpoints Caveat #2: this discussion has probably happened (and may belong) elsewhere So, should bushwhacking be illegal? Should trail-less peaks - in Acadia or anywhere - remain...

    Bushwhacks in Acadia

Re: replies Thanks, Doug, for the link to BB code tags. BlackSpruce, if you had a comment, it was perhaps too subtle for me.

    Bushwhacks in Acadia

After a great first-time Acadia bushwhack last year - McFarland Mountain northeast of Eagle Lake - I climbed Youngs Mountain, its northern neighbor this year. Both times with our 60-pound Britanny/EnglishSetter mix - on a leash! (more below) (Wish I knew how to include photos inline rather...

    1000-footers in Acadia

First post. After pooping out on my attempt last year, I grunted my way through this time. A trip that climbs all the 1000-footers in (eastern) Acadia - seven by one count. Took the earliest bus from the campground to Bar Harbor, then another bus to the Parkman Mt trailhead. In brief - Mounts...
