National Geographic: Remains of Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine believed to have been found on Everest

Who cares about Guinness? Regardless of all these cancellations, Messner and Nirmal Purja did whatever nobody believed was possible prior to their accomplishments.

Garmin changes inReach plans and fees

Yeap. Garmin jacked up inReach subscription fee in Canada as well. My "Suspended" fee started with $2.95/month in December 2016 and now it's $7.85/month that constitute 21% annual inflation rate (166% increase over 8 years). These are numbers through Roadpost that was original reseller of...

Co-workers leave Colorado man behind on mountain summit during office retreat

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hansel_and_Gretel "Hansel leaves a trail of bread crumbs for him and Gretel to follow back home. However, after they are once again abandoned, the children find that the birds have eaten the crumbs and they are lost in the woods."

    "Traditional" Route To Skylight

Among my favorite ADK views are: - Pyramid from Sawteeth - Gothics from Pyramid As a result I would recommend hiking Gothics from AMR side through Sawteeth and Pyramid, returning the same way or hiking to Upper Wolfjaw.

    "Traditional" Route To Skylight

    1) Are there "standard" or "traditional" routes for these peaks? My likely plan I think would be to do Skylight and Haystack coming in from Upper Works Trailhead via Calamity Brook and doing an overnight. Typically Skylight is not combined with Haystack. Doing Skylight together with Haystack as...

What kind of backpack can be covered with this poncho?

Let's be careful out there this week.

AFAIK elevation gain is much lower. This race, if I am not mistaken goes from Badwater only to Whitney Portal rather than to Whitney summit.

    Pre-knee replacement?

Inspired by "Post-knee replacement hiking" thread I decided to ask my question in a separate thread. I have an osteoarthritis in my knees. I may need a knee replacement in a future but so far I am OK with my own knees. It started as usually as a pain during descent and grew to a point that I...

Ultra Runner Search and Rescue in the Pemi

"the run took him longer than he expected. Naimie was otherwise uninjured." Does this phrase in the official report imply that he has completed this run on his own without any assistance?

Ultra Runner Search and Rescue in the Pemi

I am not talking about opinions. I am talking about facts. The word "rescue" has not been mentioned in the above article. It has been added by @peakbagger.

Ultra Runner Search and Rescue in the Pemi

#fakenews There was no rescue. He was moving on his own (although slower than expected) and did not need to be rescued. The word "rescue" was added by @peakbagger as an exaggeration.

    Another Unprepared Hiker Rescue

"rescuers asked the owners of the Mount Washington Cog Railway to fire up the historic steam engine and haul them uphill to his approximate location" I am curious to better understand education level of Frederick Dreier. Have they used steam engine or diesel engine during this SAR?

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

Reinhold Messner climbed Everest when no other climber was on that route. Other climbers were not even present in a base camp. For sure you can claim that you have climbed Mt. Washington solo in August disregarding other hundreds of climbers queued up on that trail. So what?

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

I have an impression that the only Everest solo climb was by Reinhold Messner from the north. You can't call it a solo climb when you move together with a hundred of other climbers. https://www.quora.com/How-many-people-have-climbed-Mount-Everest-solo

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

You can't compare South Col/Southeast Ridge route on Everest to any trail in White Mountains. South Col/Southeast Ridge route is way more technical. Nobody has ever solo climbed it while solo hiking is routine in White Mountains.

Can I assume that not having snowshoes was his main mistake?

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

If I do not have a stove with me, knowledge of how to use a liquid fuel stove is useless. If you do not have a stove with you, melting snow with your body heat is better than not drinking at all. BTW, I do not understand "never eat a snow" advice. When I was a schoolboy and was playing outside...
