Madison the AT dog finishes the 48

Madison reminds me so much of my best and deeply missed hiking partner, Codie. Did many hikes with her in MA, NH, ME, VT and my present location in GA and SC. Her last years we only did short hikes. Thanks for sharing.

how long to save a "lost and found" item ?

Depends on the value. I personally would not leave anything at a kiosk unless it was an out and back hike and I found it on the way back. I have seen to many jackets, water bottles, etc. pile up at those locations.

Best hike Snow (Chain of Ponds) while you can- Feds $1M Penobscot Nation wind "farm"

...and 15 years ago it was outrage over cell towers. Now there are threads abut where you can pick up service and which provider is best. If the US plans on becoming energy independent, reducing the carbon footprint, etc. We have to start somewhere. How is Cape Wind progressing? Thanks for...

    National Recgnition.....

Found it satisfying to find that the trail I have adopted, Bartram Trail (well 9 miles of it) for the local mt bike club in Augusta, GA has been recognized as a National Recreational Trail. For most its 18 miles (plus 9 more when you add Keg Creek trail) you wander along the southern shores of...

Did Ramshead, Snowdown and Killington 10-12 years ago via the slopes/their hiking trails. Good views along the way.

Maine Huts & Trails--New Executive Director

I was just looking at the hut system in Maine the other day for possible bikebacking trip. IMO bring more people into the fold of using the huts is a great idea for business. I have also felt for a long time the more people you get into the woods, let it be by foot, ski or bike the more people...

Mountain Rescue Service speaks up about State billing

"It does not, however, include the cost of the National Guard helicopter," Could someone explain to me the break down of a $7000 rescue than?

East West Highway Study Funding for Maine approved by Maine Senaate

This reminds me of the proposed I-3 that would link Savannah, GA to Knoxville, TN. Stretches of the proposed route have in the last decade seen the current rural highways going from 2 lanes to 4 lanes with many bypasses of the town centers. Opposition to I-3 are mainly the proposed routes...

What gear do you dream of getting, or getting rid of....

Salsa Fargo http://salsacycles.com/bikes/fargo/ with an assortment of saddle, frame and handle bar bags for bikebacking. With the amount of dirt roads, forest service roads, and trails in the southern Appalachians, I believe this would be a fun way to explore them. Adventure by bike!

    An ounce of prevention...

IMO, Maddy did the right thing. To question her instincts when she felt the "danger light" go on makes no sense to me. Also, the police, not knowing what was up did the right thing. I am a guy and have come across others on the trail/trail head that had my senses say "watch out".

    abandoned R&R's

Found this http://members.fortunecity.com/railtrails/MA/BW/ about the Ware River Rail Trail going from Barre, MA up to Winchendon, MA with a few detours. From there you could connect to routes going north to Jaffery, NH (I believe this r&r bed goes all the way up to Hillsborough, NH ( I...

    abandoned R&R's

Thanks for the info. 42 miles from Walpole to Fitzwilliam, NH and than further south into MA looks good. The old bed goes thru the center of Keene. Good place to stop for lunch. Main concern I have is getting to an area to find a bridge has been removed. I am pretty sure the rail road bed...

    abandoned R&R's

I am wondering if there is a good source that shows abandoned rail roads right of ways of New England. There is a chance of me going up this summer and thought this may be a way to get in some long distance mt biking in. One area I am really interested in the old R&R going from Winchendon, MA...

New multi-use trail segment to cost $83/inch

I recently read in the last year that the health care savings is anywhere from 10-20 times the cost of putting in "trails" per year. Also the two green ways that I live near also handle a lot of bike commuters per day also.

Rumors about Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal

After hiking Raven Cliff Falls Trail in northern GA last summer I wouldn't call it "long-term protection" Maybe from logging but that trail is like a herd path along a creek with numerous large campsites. My family and I did another hike, maybe two miles away to Duke Creek. What a difference.

Rumors about Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal

How about volunteers? Besides bringing in and laying the stringers across the river, two or three people could place the decking in a day. Mt bike club I'm in has done a few bridges (repair and brand new) and all are half day projects. Our longest is about 25' which I am sure shorter than what...
