Trail and mountain: Firewarden's trail to Mt. Abraham. Note that the map and guide book calls it the Firewarden's trail, but the trailhead sign says "Mt. Abraham trail".
Date of Hike: 10/11/09
Trail Conditions: Very muddy on first section between trailhead and the logging road that you need to cross. All stream crossings are easy but mossy rocks require a little extra caution. Windy once above tree line, and a little ice on some rocks but not enough to require traction. Brief hailstorm left some ice and snow between the rocks.
Special Equipment Required: Wind protection
Comments: Fantastic 360-degree views. If you don't care about doing the entire hike from the official trailhead, and want to skip the muddiest parts of the hike, you can drive past the trailhead sign to the point where the trail crosses the logging road, and park there as some hikers did. The road is pretty rough, though, and an SUV or another vehicle with high ground clearance is recommended but not absolutely required.
