I know, I know, the hiking season isn't quite done, but with the ski season having already started, the end is nigh, at least for me.
As of the afternoon of 21 August 2009, my goal was to avoid focusing on--obsessing over?--any one official list. Instead, I came up with an ever-expanding "To-do List," written on a now well-worn sheet of yellow, ruled, legal-size paper. My hiking season this year--and I don't include post-work hikes in the Greens--officially began with the 46ers work day on the annual meeting weekend. During the course of our trailwork, I checked off my second item on the To-do List: visiting Indian Pass. (The first item I'd checked off the previous Labor Day before sustaining a season ending injury.)
June and half of July passed before I hiked again. It was not a good start.
On 10 July, I checked off the third item on the To-do List: purchase a pair of Limmer Standards. The two-hour visit to the shop was outstanding. Pete & Ken showed me all sorts of boots in various states of construction & repair, happily answering all of my questions, while I worked to find the right size boot.
The next day, I re-started my hiking season (no, not in my brand-new Limmers, they had to wait a couple of months before they were broken in enough and even then I started using them a bit early). A hike of the Davis Path was on the To-do List, so I gladly joined my friend Jeff S. on a hike of Crawford, Stairs, East Stairs, Resolution, & Parker, bagging four three thousand footers and a NH200 peak in the process. One couldn't have asked for a better hike. We visited craggy summits, enjoyed a bit of bushwhacking, and returned to our cars well after dark.
Since that day in mid-July, I've gotten in what I consider is a respectable number of hikes, all of which were of the highest quality. In the process, I checked off nine, maybe ten, items on the To-do List and have bagged fourteen three thousand footers and three NH 200 peaks, not to mention revisiting the summits of four NH four thousand footers. Some of my hikes have been solo, others have been with outstanding partners Kul45, Jeff S., & Erik J. Looking back at the season, I'm delighted with the number of goals I've accomplished in spite of a rather late start to my season.
The following are some photographic highlights from several of my hikes.
