Kind of an interesting article. Mortenson clearly never could have imagined where how climbing K2 could have influenced his life when he set off for it.

Thanks for posting the NYT piece. And, yes, ironic that the NYT did not review the first edition of "Three Cups of Tea; One Man's Mission to Fight Terrorism One School at a Time" in 2006 (only 20,000 copies published). Greg Mortenson was very opposed to the subtitle, but was only able to change it to "One Man's Mission to Promote Peace One School at a Time" for the paperback edition in 2007, which has sold over 4 million copies and been on the NYT best sellers list since it came out. When Greg came to Bentley University in spring 2009, he spoke and showed slides for over two hours and then answered questions for another two hours in the afternoon; he had spent the entire morning at another fund raiser, and would do another that evening. The guy really is on a mission; he is a wonderful human being.

Yes, a great book and Greg's "Stones into Schools: Promoting peace with books not bombs in Pakistan and Afganistan" is a truly great follow-up book. The amount of talks/lectures that he has done promoting his work is unbelievable, what a great man.

Early yesterday, NPR carried a nice BBC interview with Mortenson. He's doing great work. Interesting that he's trying to build girl's schools. Quote from the interview: "Educate a boy, and you educate a man. Educate a girl, and you educate a village." Too bad he operates half the time under death threats from stone age whackos.
