#36 and #37
Our trip north took a detour to Framingham to hit the REI. Gorpburp just graduated from 8th grade and it was time to get a backpack for his graduation present. While packing for the trip he gave me my father’s day gift…MSR Whisperlite. I think he is making a guarantee that he will always eat. My old stove is older then he is. We got to the North Country with extra time but not enough for a peak. We took a stroll into Podicherry to see the loon chicks and warblers and hope for a grouse.
We opted to seep up those random peaks that have eluded our efforts. We decided to go for Cabot. It was a steamy hike through Bunnel Notch. Moose tracks out numbered human tracks. There was plenty of wildlife to see on the trail. We spotted a bear print near the intersection with the Killkenney Ridge trail. After summiting to peak we backtracked to the cabin for a snack on the porch and watched a black-backed woodpecker and some yellow-rumped warblers make their rounds.
We made it down off the mountain in good time. I feared getting locked in behind the hatchery gate. We met a guy posting signs protesting the proposed prison in Milan. Driving out we saw a yound bull moose with his velvet covered ligh bulbs sticking our of his head.
We knew the next day was going to be hot and humid. So we hit the trail at 8:00 for Moriah. The air was rather still, the views were a bit hazy. Going up Stony Brook Trail we got to experience all of the false summits. The insects were not too bad.
On the decent we ran into MEB and Little Sister who were up braving the bugs and heat. We chatted a bit. On the descent we stopped to cool down at the brook crossings.
All weekend we heard only two grouse drumming. However, there were plenty of thrushes, warblers and wrens singing. The cone crop on the trees looks promising for the winter finches in six months...not that I can't enjoy the moment.
We chalked the trip up as a conditioning hike to get prepared for a backpacking traverse of the Presis in July.
