Headed up to Tripoli road from Concord around 8:30 yesterday morning to conquer Osceola with my wife. It was a bit hazy and I was worried we might get stuck in some downpours. It didn't bother me so much, as it might make it less enjoyable for my wife Mia.
I do have to thank you guys for the information after the post I listed under Q&A. I asked her if she wanted to to Pemi and when I told her the distance she was said "that sounds kind wimpy". So it was off to Osceola, My 6th peak her 1st.
My wife's exercise activity has slacked off quite a bit since starting school last fall. But she has started to pick up were she left off last summer, but isn't close to where she was. I'm glad she choose something a little "harder" then her wimpy assessment of Pemi (though I am sure the views would have been killer like you all suggested). She doesn't like to do things that are easy though. I'm hoping she'll get the peak bagging bug and start joining me on more hikes. Our first hike together 4 years ago consisted of a 7.5 mile slog along the Pervical Morgan loop was accompanied with thunder/lightening and some severly harsh winds. I think that might have been once of the signs that she was a keeper as she never complained once.
Driving up Tripoli from Waterville brought back some nightmarish memories of the now thankfully deceased Pemi-Classic road race. a 30 mile lap (2 laps for my race) climbing up the Lincoln side and descending to Waterville. Even though the Waterville side is paved, it has to be the worst pavement one can possibly race a bike on. In 3 attempts at that race I broke a stem, 2 wheels, and finished ONCE. I had a love hate relationship with that race. However I digress....
The parking lot was packed full, given it isn't that big in the first place, so it did not take many cars to do so. We got on the boots and headed up the trail right around 9:45 or so.
It wasn't in the full heat of the day yet, and there was a definite coolness present in the woods, and the further we climbed up the nicer it got. A light breeeze and cooler temperatures awaited the high we got.
I was operating on about half speed for my hiking abilities and she asked me several times if I was getting anxious with people passing us. I told her it didn't bother me. I was just happy to be spending some time with my wife in the woods
This was definitely the easiest of the 4Ks that I have done so far. The footing is good, the grade is never super steep, and the potential views are great. However upon reaching the top, we were pretty much in the clouds/haze and the view was cut back drastically. The temp had to be in the lower 70's with a nice cool breeze. We hung out at the top for a bit and had a snack, snapped a few photos, and then left as it started to get crowded.
The descent was nice, saw some sort of either grouse or pheasant wandering in the woods, but never could get a good view of him.
It was definitely much hotter down at the car again, and the parking lot looked like a Honda Element commerical.
We headed down to Lincoln, over to Thornton and had a slice of pizza at the country store at the intersecion of 49 and 3. Not sure of the name, but the pizza and Snapple hit the spot after the climb.
So, if you want to take an S.O. on a hike wich won't kill them or your relationship, has a potential rewarding view and plenty of room to spread out, I would highly recommend this hike.
