went up mt liberty after work tuesday night. absolutely blue skies and still. amazing to sit on the summit and take it all in. some nice people staying at liberty springs, chatted with them for a while on the way down. a few backpackers heading up, it was fun to see others enjoying during the week. 2 of them were thru hikers. got down about 9 and headed home. some DITZ left one of those camping shovels used to dig a trench(90 degree angle sticking straight up) in the middle of route 93, I tried to swerve and heard a nice BANG prior to getting flung off the road. At least I got practice at changing my tire. If I had been killed I could have used the shovel to dig my own grave. Anyways, I have a nice (expensive) new tire and got some nice views from Mt. Liberty. One thing that seems funny to me: it was such a wet spring and summer, but I have hardly felt a mosquito or black fly all season, and I've been out almost every night and weekends too. Maybe they all drowned? I tried hiking in a pair of trail runners, real nice and light, good traction, on the way down my toes would jam a little bit forwards. I'm on a mission to try different types of footwear this week. Next hike will by a new pair of llbean crestas.

Nice Trip Report. I can't complain about the mosquitos and black flies either. I get about 10 to 20 bites (20 on a bad day) each hike and they annoying but so what? Still beats sitting at home! Now, if I had 100 bites I might have a case to complain!

I did my Hale-Zeacliff-Twin loop in new shoes the other day. I didn't get trail runners -- I got these low top hiking shoes. They were pretty nice... but they have a stiff sole so they're not technically trail runners. Thinking about those, maybe.

Wu,
I'm looking for new shoes (NB discontinued the MA900, and the 901 is not as nice). What are you using?

Bob, glad it was only a tire. Road debris is treacherous! So, howe do you like our new, slightly used, shovel? (FWIW, I expected to read about a speeding ticket...)
