Hikers name: Farmer Bob and Jenifer.
Hike date(s): 8/25-27/06
Weather and trail conditions: It was partly cloudy and cool. All trails were in good condition. Parts of the Star Lake Tr. were hard to find.
Total miles hiked: 10.3
Trip report: On 8/25/06, we spotted my truck at Appalachia Parking then we headed over to Dolly Copp campgrounds were we had reservations for the weekend. We pitched our tent and went to sleep.

On 8/26/06, we woke up and had breakfast. We made reservations at Dolly Copp so we would be near the trailhead for the Daniel Webster Scout Tr. While I was preparing breakfast, I saw three hikers on the road. I said good morning and they said it back. I watched them and a few steps later they were at the trailhead. Our tent was only 40 feet from the trailhead. We geared up and were on the trail by 8am.
The start of the Daniel Webster Scout Tr. was easy. The trail goes through a big area of damaged forest. It looks like it may be remains for the ice damage several years back. Pretty soon we reached a sign stating “Attention: top physical condition” and other warnings about above tree line travel. The trail started to get steeper and we say another sign welcoming us to the alpine zone.
The trail continued to get steeper and the views opened up. We had a very steep climb just before we reached the Osgood Junction. We took a break at the Junction and enjoyed the views.
After a break, we headed up the Osgood Tr. towards Mt. Madison. As we headed up to Madison, the very top of Mt. Adams was in a dark cloud. The climb up Madison was fun. The views kept getting better and the sun was out from the clouds. We spent a few minutes on the summit and we rushed down to Madison Hut so we could have lunch.
After we had lunch, we headed over to the Star Lake Tr. to go up Mt. Adams. By the time we started climbing up the Star Lake Tr., our legs were sore but we continued up the trail. It was difficult at times to follow the Star Lake Tr. There are cairns and blazes but several times it took a minute or two to find the trail. We got to a point on the trail were there was an arrow on a large boulder pointing to the left. It was a very steep climb up towards Adams. It reminded us of the Chimney on the Osceola Tr. We made it up and shortly we were on Mt. Adams. There were a couple other hikers on the summit. We hung out for a few minutes, and then headed down.
Going down the Airline/Gulfside Tr. was fun, but tough on the legs. We eventually made it back to Madison hut. Jenifer filled up her Platypus then we headed down Valley Way.
We both were pretty beat going down VW. It seemed to go on forever. We heard cars and thought we were close, but a sign reminded us that we still had 2.4 miles to go.
It was starting to get dark in the woods so we picked it up a little and made it out before the sun was totally gone.
We jumped into my truck and went to Pizza Hut in Gorham for dinner
(big mistake). Then we headed back to Dolly Copp.
The next morning we woke up, broke down camp, and went to the Blueberry Muffin in Conway for breakfast. Then we headed home.
This was a great hike. Half the day we were above tree line with excellent views and weather. It took us almost 12 hours for the 10.3 miles but it was worth it. Two more for Jenifer's 48.

Nice TR, Farmer Bob. It brought back memories seeing pix of the Daniel Webster Scout Trail, the same route I took to Madison all those years ago. Looked like you and Jenifer had a fun time!

Yes, I consider him the new Old Man of the Mountain. But many tourist will not be able to see him since they would have to hike up the Daniel Webster Scout Tr. to the Osgood Tr. to see him, since he is on the west side of Mt. Madison. Or they would have to take several other trails to see him but it wouldn't be easy.
