Saturday at Balsam Lake, we met a young man named Matt, who used to be an AFR in the Catskills and has worked for the ADK up in the ADKs. He told us he had hiked from Lake Placid to where we were (at least 200 miles, probably a lot more), via a combination of the NPT, parts of the Long Path, road walking, and bushwhacking! And he was by no means done. He was heading South, towards High Point Monument in New Jersey, where we was going to pick up the AT and hike as far as he could before Winter sets in! After that, my 3 mile hike to the tower seemed pretty lame!
The rest of the weekend we also met a few other interesting visitors. One was Kingdon Gould's Granddaughter. This makes 6 members of the Gould family that I have met, 5 of them at the top of the mountain. Another group came up in the rain and hung out in the cabin for quite some time, hoping it would stop pouring. We had a nice long chat with them. The last group was 4 kids and 2 adults that were wet but happy.
Only 1 person visited us Sunday (the rain gauge said 2.5" of rain had fallen! ), and she came up from Alder Lake, having met Matt the day before.
After spending most of the rainy weekend doing inventory, we headed out between rain storms with heavy packs full of 'inventory'!
