Friday night,Feb 9, thirteen hikers gathered at the Harvard Cabin for an AMC trip under the leadership of the amazing Mohamed Ellozy.
A few of us began the traditional happy hour on Friday night, with intros, and a sampling of the various beverages, including some Polish rocket fuel, and a bottle of Caribou, direct from the Quebec Winter Carnaval.
Saturday morning,we fueled up on a breakfast of pancakes and sausages, after spending the night "camped" in the cabin loft, which was about as warm as it was outside. One of our group,Chris, decided to just get right to it ,and camp out front, where he was serenaded by "howler monkeys" It was later agreed that they were owls,as we haven't seen monkey tracks lately!
The days venture was the Imp Loop, from north to south. The climb up was fairly easy in bare boots, but as we went higher,it was decided that we would let the "younger, and faster" crowd move on ahead of us,with Mohamed and 4 of us moving at a more relaxed pace.
The group gathered at the Imp lookout and we all gorged on delicious cookies, and enjoyed the spectacular view. It was apparently not as nice a day in the Presi's and we could see the waves of snow being blasted across the summits.
The trip down quickly found us in lots of ice and crampons were a must. Mohamed took a spill, which fortunately, resulted in no injuries. Shortly after,I did a faceplant on the trail,as I clipped a rock with a crampon spike. Nothing hurt but my pride.
We all met up later,at the Harvard Cabin for a food fest, with accomanying beverages of all strange varieties, and an evening of trail tales .
Next morning,we start all over again, with a hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage and 100 gallons of coffee.
The "speedy hikers" set out for a climb on No. Kearsarge, while our leisurely group took the great Gulf trail to The Bluff, for some views. This is a great trail for a short hike with big views. The footing was easy until the last half mile where the snow was getting deep enough for snowshoes, which of course, were back in the car.
In no time at all, there we were at the Bluff, with the amazing view of the gulf and the snow capped Presidentials.
After a short break in the brisk wind,we headed back out and went our seperate ways, agreed that it was a wonderful weekend of hiking with friends, old and new.
