needed to get my bog fix so I headed up to Philbrick-Cricenti Bog in New London (NH, not CT). I am very envious of people who live in/near New London; there are several parks there which are worth visiting. The bog is one of the best bogs to access in the state; NH Natural Heritage Bureau has a brochure on the place. I've been here a number of times in late June but never this early. The water table was a bit high & boots are a must. (saw two other people there, one was walking along the bog boardwalk holding a coffee cup  ) The bog boardwalk is in need of repair in a number of spots, but it's worth the effort.

more details & photos here (password in my profile)

Also went to one of my other "Site X"s that I frequent; this time the Virginia waterleaf (Hydrophyllum virginianum) was beginning to bloom. Herb-robert (Geranium robertianum) also, but when it first opens, the petals don't seem to separate, they cling together in twos and threes, so I didn't take any pictures of them. I was having a nice afternoon solitude meandering through the woods towards a spot I wanted to revisit when my GPS lost lock (see the gps discussion thread) & I had to revert to my familiarity w/ the area. Awful wet today, even with gaiters on.

Did you pull the stick at P-C, and how muddy did it get you :)

Philbrick-Cricenti Bog is a real gem, changing its main-attraction flora every week, which is why I try to get there once a week. And, living close, it's a real pleasure to stroll there with a cup of coffee from nearby Jack's....usually Kenyan AA.
In the summer the bog is alive with white-thoated sparrows, sounding very much like the high ridges in the Whites. My favorite time at the bog is late autumn when the larches turn pumpkin-color.
And with the three nearby mountains--Kearsarge, Ragged, Sunapee--there's always a nice short hike awaiting after a bogwalk.
