I missed getting out the last couple weeks so I convinced (bribed actually) my 2 boys to do a quick overnight on Saturday. Lattinhill and Maya would join us near Bear Rock Falls on the AT in MA. Dave came in from the NY side and was set up and waiting for us by 3pm. We came up through the ravine from the CT/MA border, arriving behind schedule at about 4. The temperature was dropping with the sun so we got set up quickly. By 5:30 the boys were fed, snacking and (here comes the bribe part) watching a DVD of a movie they had wanted to see !
Oh well, they had still hiked in with all their own gear and were tenting in winter conditions, so I can't complain. I enjoy their company. That evening Dave and I enjoyed conversation and beverages in our site. It got down to 22 degrees outside, but the low temp recorded in the tent was 34 degrees, so we were comfortable. Morning came quick and we all decided to bug out early. No big deal, just a nice local overnight with a friend, his dog and my 2 boys !

Chip... It sounded like a good time...

I ended up doing the 'Good Uncle' thing on Saturday and attended my niece and nephews combination birthday party/sugar fest... Funny how some folks call it ADD when some kid is mainline-ing iceling like a crackhead... :D

I hiked around on Sunday for a bit, saw Latinhill's buggie at the CT/MA border on the west side of Sages... Looked like the AMC cabin was empty this past weekend, what a shame...

How was Laurel for camping? I checked it out a few times this summer but never stayed over night...

Catch you later...

Hiked past the new Laurel campsites, and also Bear Rock Falls but have never camped in either. Bear Rock looks like a really nice place, but perhaps closer to the AT, whereas Laurel looks to be slightly above the trail and there's some privacy shrubs blocking the trail.

I enjoyed hiking up the Ravine when Fred and I met Chip and the boys and Alpinista there at Sages Ravine... It is a very fun way to attain the AT there... and there is for the most part a good herdpath.

p.s. what movie was on the DVD player, couldn't make out the title. I'm disappointed you didn't bring a sub and some rear speakers and have a true DTS playback! :)

"The Fast and the Furious" with Vin Diesel ! Extra speakers would just be over-the-top, no ? ;)

Laurel Ridge was 3 platforms and an outhouse on the side of the hill just above the trail. Not a bad set-up except if you don't know or care for your neighbors, as all 3 platforms are squared off right next to each other. It obviously does not compare to Bear Rock Falls, which is one of the nicest (albeit former) sites in the region. Can't say I noticed much in the way of re-vegetation occuring there either. :(

As Dave and Maya found out Saturday afternoon; hunters hunt JUST off the trail there and aren't slow to let hikers know they should stay on the trail.

Great time Chip, good spot for an easy overnight, which explains why I've camped there so many times over the years. You're right though, It was much nicer when it was next to the falls.
Kevin, I don't know what time you drove through, but the barrier was up when I got to my car Sunday morning. Didn't notice it Saturday.

Dave... the barrier was up when I got there about 8am...

Looks like you guys had perfect weather and a great moon out :)

Hey Dave, did you see any more mystery lights in the dark this time out? ;)

No, the mystery lights were us this time. :D Actually, I went up to the upper tent sites with this in mind, and it seems that the lights we saw were quite a bit higher on the ridge. Strange , because it's pretty thick up there.
