This is of particular interest to those who attended or read about Gathering 6.0 in Eustis, ME and those close to the ADK's (a bit apart but they will come together).
I returned (late) Sunday evening from Sugarloaf USA. A trip with no planning, as I found out on Saturday evening the week prior in Lake Placid that my daughter had been selected one of seven female ski racers to represent New York at the Eastern Cup Finals (ski races at Sugarloaf - qualifiers for Nationals). Last Sunday (after ski races) I had to drive 6.5 hrs back home to the Buffalo area, work a day Monday and take off for the 11-hour drive to ME on Tuesday.
In making quick reservations for lodging, a fellow ski parent had recommended a place near Sugarloaf that was very reasonable so I secured a room. The mountain's central reservations service rep was the first of several to let me know that staying there "might be an adventure", followed by my daugther's state coach and then others that I spoke with. We stayed in Farmington (about 45 miles south) Tuesday night and it was in the AM when I realized that something was funny and familiar. The reservations were for the WHITE WOLF Inn -- a place that earned notoriety on this forum for being rude and unkind to VFTT patrons. The VFTT "Leather Apron" award was inaugurated from this occasion... I spoke on the phone with TeeJay who shared a laugh and confirmed my suspicions. Reservations were cancelled/changed.
I changed lodging to a wonderful Bed & Breakfast in Stratton called the Tranquillity Lodge (-.com) and I plug them because we had a delightful stay. After dinner out on Friday evening, I adjourned with fellow guests to the Gathering Room and fell into conversation. One car had a ME license plate that read "I HIKE 2" - so I was out to find the owner (a VFTT'r?? do tell). As it turns out, another guest was a hiker, an ADK hiker and an ADK 46'r with a low 200-teens number. As it turns out I had the delightful opportunity to meet fellow VFTT member Tony Goodwin, ATIS guru, author of ADK books and editor of the ADK Guidebook. Tony and his wife were overnight at the lodge to meet up with his college bound son the following day.
Tony and I shared conversation for a good hour or more. I truly enjoyed talking to him and so appreciate his knowledge and dedication to the ADKs. I considered our meeting very fortunate... and, nicely enough, he knew me from my years on this board.
Skiing was decent as some snow had fallen. My daughter (HS Jr.) held her own against some pretty stiff Div I college competitors in Suger G, GS and SL(this was about experience not trophies). And... I have an updated Voucher that expires in 2007... when are we having a voucher day??
Better yet - we going to do another ski trip this year??
