The locals were complaining about the lack of snow. Their ski area bases range from 5 to 12 FEET, for crying out loud! In spite of some rain and sleet (in California they call it snain), we had a wonderful week in the backcountry and on the slopes. That place will make a treehugger out of you: the pines, firs, sequoias, and other giants are eye-popping.
I did discover the drawbacks of taking along some 20-year-old guidebooks: streets and regulations change, buildings appear, and roads disappear. We made it up Scott Peak via a totally different route (an 8K), but the Burton Creek/Painted Rock route was indecipherable, plus we blundered onto a cross-country ski trail which was emphatically not what we were looking for, so we just picked a point on a distant ridge and headed for it through the woods which are unbelievably open.
