Before leaving the house I wondered if I should bring my snowshoes, but I decided not to bring them. Arrived in Adirondack I regretted my decision. Our goal that day was to hiked Colvin and Blake.
At the parking there were approximately 6 inches of snow on the ground. Once we signed the register the employee told us that Jay received 6 inches of snow but here and at the top of mountains there is a lot more. As we walked on Lake Road we saw at least 8 inches of snow and several tens of trees curved and broken. We met two hikers and we asked them where they were coming from? They said that they tried to hike Colvin and Blake. But they turned back because there were to much snow (36 inches) and there were too many trees fallen into the path. One of the two had come especially for Blake because it was is last of the 46. They told us that there is a couple hiking the path in snowshoes and which perhaps they will reach the top and that could help us. We decided to take a chance. Indeed there is much snow the more we go up on the mountain but it is not so bad. After the intersection toward Nippletop there remain 1.8 miles to Colvin. Right after we met the couple, Guy (friend of PinPin jr) and his girlfriend, they told us that they turned back because there were too many trees in the path and there were too much snow.
Nevertheless we continued for approximately ½ miles and we also decided to turn back (One mile before the top).
But the trees were very beautiful with all that snow, and a splendid blue sky. I do not know when the path will be in condition to go back again. There is a lot of work to do to clear the path.
