We wanted to go to Flowed lands to hike Redfield and Cliff Saturday. We started off in microspikes which lasted until the first road junction, from there we switched to snowshoes (MSRs). About 1/4 mile after that I started punching through the snow down 6-12" even when on the packed trail (250 lb person with at least a 30-40 lb pack). We made the decision to abort so we drove down to the Allen trailhead and night hiked Adams. The conditions were more of the same, continually punching through a crust on the snow into softer snow below. If you're planning to go out this weekend bring big snowshoes to stay above the crust.
