Great pictures, thanks. Nice to get an inside view of efforts such as this.

One question though, is "beer please" english or french? :D

Aconcaqua Photos

Spectacular. I am sure you are pleased with your effort. It looks like your trip was guided. It sounds like Frodo, Arm, and Mountaingirl are going unguided. Is there a large saving in expense to go unguided? What would the reason be otherwise?

You are correct. There are some savings to be made by going unguided.
I would have to compare notes with Frodo to quantify.
In our case, we went with an outfitter because of the timing. Unfortunately,
I did not have time to handle all the logistics involved because of work.

its a big arse mountain. :D :D I would also imagine it was easier to have a guide deal with the logistics, like mules, food, etc.............. but of course jean would know better

What was taken out by helicopter ? déchets ? losses ? what's that, garbage ?

Actually, garbage and fecal matter...

When you get to base camp they give a nice plastic bag with your climbing permit number on it for use during your climb. It is mandatory to return the bag when you get back down to base camp. You can no longer do your business where ever you please and that's actually a good thing.... :D

Not only does one save a lot of money by going unguided in the mountains, but some find much more challenge and reward in finding one's own way (like solo bushwhacking White Mountain peaks, for example). That said, when we climbed Aconcagua in February 2005, I certainly was not going to pass up sending about 75 pounds of gear into base camp at 14,200 ft via mule, making our two-day hike to base camp much lighter and more enjoyable; the pack mules were much, much cheaper than hiring a guide, by about ten times, I think.

I really hope that Mountain Girl can lick the altitude sickness and catch up with Frodo and Arm. Perhaps taking three days to base camp would have been better for her? Good luck to all three of them; it is a huge mountain.
