Adams & Madison via Airline/Gulfside/Valley Way
Date of Hike: 4-25-09
Trail Conditions: Snow and ice began about 1 mile up on Airline but disappeared where trail breaks out above treeline and is exposed to the sun. Gulfside between the peaks had many ice and snow covered spots. Adams summit cone had tricky areas with slick ice and rotten snow; Madison summit cone was nearly snow and ice free and posed no problems. Valley Way had plenty of slick snow and ice for the first mile down…snow and ice gradually faded from trail until it eventually disappeared about ¾ of the way down. Lots of water rushing under much of the ice and snow on all trails.
Special Equipment Required: We used only microspikes for traction gear today and we did fine. We also did a good amount of barebooting.
Comments: Was rainy in the early morning hours but the day warmed and brightened up nicely! Winds on Adams were blowing at about 30 mph. Less windy on Madison with temps hitting the low 60s. Felt like summertime! Might have to wait a few more weeks before switching to trailrunners.
