In the Adirondacks, most of the activities we partake in are free. (There are two privately owned parking lots that charge a fee.) The rest, AFAIK, is absolutely gratis.

This includes hiking, camping, climbing, paddling, and using one of the 160+ lean-to's scattered throughout the park.

Getting rescued
, which is a distinct possibility for us "chronic users" of the park, is also free, including chopper rescues.

In the recent past we at ADKHighpeaks and ADKForum have organized various gatherings and group 46er hikes that have been nothing short of roaring successes if you want my opinion.

Mavs00 and I have always wanted to use the forums in a more constructive way but hadn't really come up with any bright ideas so we just cruised along.

Then, we realized we could link one of these fun gatherings/hikes with a concrete gesture of giving back.

This is what we came up with:

On September 6th, 2008 (first Saturday after labor day weekend) hikers will climb each of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks and will "donate" their peak to the Keene Valley SAR, a group of volunteer firemen/first responders who are ready to drop everything and rescue hikers in the Keene Valley area.

There will be a pre-gathering on Friday night and after the hike on Saturday we gather, big-time, on the banks of the Ausable River for a grand pot-luck supper and party at the Ark Trail Inn. The owners are 46-ers who love to party and they let us completely take over their excellent motel and facility, which has "gathering" written all over it.

We are working out some of the details still and very soon several threads will pop up on ADKHighpeaks related to coordinating "Peaks and People", the pot-luck supper, where to sleep (we have contacted several places and they seem willing to kick back a portion of the room charges to our fund raiser). A site for making electronic donations is just about up and running.

This event is a bit of a test case for us but we are confident that it will be a success. The funds we raise will go directly towards the purchase of the gear that is detailed in the attached file.

When the threads are up and running this thread will get updated.

Hope to see you there!
