Date of Hike: 5/3/2009
Trail Conditions:
Airline: no snow until 4000', patchy snow to treeline. No snow above treeline except a well cpnsolidated snowfiled before Edmonds Col and a couple of snowfields below Jefferson (one steepish). Bad postholing and insecure on Castle Ridge trail below treeline and for quite a ways down. River crossing was easy.
Special Equipment Required: Walked in light hikers. Put microspikes for a short time on Castle trail but it did not help much.
Comments: Airline was nice and easy and our feet were dry almost all day untill we dropped below the treeline on Castle Ridge trail. Then the real fun began. Not sure if snowshoes would work very well for that descent. Saw one person the entire beautiful day - I wonder why? Lately we seem to be happily out of zinc with the crowds.
