Plan on doing Algonquin/Iroquios on Nov. 12. Anyone want to join?

I was thinking of attempting a full Mac traverse including Marshall after Dec 21. We did it last fall in 12 hours including a bushwhack up the Wright slide and a lot of summit time so given the right conditions it should be do-able in winter sans the slide. Interested?

Sounds interesting. Keep me up to date. Give me a weeks advanced notice if at all possible.

Full MacIntyre Range....

Hi TonyL & Neil, :)

You will have two nice challenges in this project to cross the MacIntyre Range in Winter.

The first interessing thing will be to go down the South side of Iroquois, the last section before the col is cover by the nice cliffs with very few place to go down without a rope!!!

The nex challenge will be to stay in the path to go directly from this col to Marshall. Very few people used this approach in winter and this path is very difficult to see with deep snow. A large part of this forest is very dence and not very friendly for a bushhike!!!

I think We need to know what is the tree falling condition in this area before to fixe a date.... ;)

But I will be interessing to joint You if You will advise me one week before the day line.

Pinpin Junior. :)

Hi Pin-Pin! The cliffs are easily avoided by going left when you get to them. There's a very easy ramp/chimney (hope I can find it again!) that brings you to the trail. As for going up Marshall things could get pretty interesting. The best would be to go now and record a tracklog (I've seen that called electronic flagging) before the trail is completely buried. If its not too late already, that is.

Any volunteers to go and electronically flag the herd trail? (Not to be confused with the herd trail up Herbert Brook, BTW).

Neil I would be happy to go if I only had a GPS and knew how to use it! I guess I'll just go and put up lots of old fashion tape flagging, maybe blaze a few trees while I'm at it.

We did that trip in Winter, March of 1992 with Fred Hunt. We had perfect conditions in doing so. We started from Wright and worked our way over. We stopped at Shepard's Tooth (My first time there) then worked our way down the cliffs of Iroquios Pass (different name now). It is quite adventurous and tricky as there is only one way to get down safely. Then going up Marshall through thick spruce and deep snow. Returning Via Scott's Clearing. It took us less than 12 hours.

Couldn't imagine it now with all the blowdown, especially after Floyd.

Why not run one long strand of tape from bottom to top? Via plastica.

Yaaaaaaawn............. That trip seems so, well, just plain ordinary

If you REALLY want entice the likes of Pin Pin (or even someone like me  ) on a Mac Traverse in winter, you gotta be more original. How bout we do the ole' Flim, Flam, MAC Daddy Cross.......

You know, start from Tahawus, shimmy up Marshall from the west (via the slide), revere cross all the way over to Wright. Then we, butt slide the Angel down to Avalanche Camp. Then we'll saunter back through the pass, past Lake Colden and out Calamity Brook.

I'M IN, pick a day in Late Dec. - Early Jan. we'll meet in Newcomb, have a little breackfast and hit the trail at around 8-8:30 or so. I'd bring a headlamp though, with Pin Pin slowing us down Neil, it's lible to be pushing dusk by the time we finish.

---------------------------

Oh by the way, make sure you guy keep updating the TRAIL CONDITIONS.... Soon as I read Cascade is "broke out" this winter, I'M SOOOOO There.
