It's funny how stuff like this spreads so quickly on the internet. This is probably the 4th website I've seen these photos posted on... :)
 
We saw something similar to this up in the Whites one evening. There were this wild "rays" of light across the sky. It turned out to be shadows cast by the setting sun below the horizon. The sky wasn't actually clear, but slightly hazy very high up in altitude. The net result was that the shadows looked like dark blue stripes in an otherwise pale-colored sky. Unfortunately, I did not have a good enough camera with me that day to capture it.
 
Wow! Rainier is special in so many ways. I hadn't seen those pictures before and next time I'm out that way it would be cool to try to see that cast of shadow. I've seen shadows of mountains from the mountains, but never when away from the mountain.
