Once again the Boston Chapter offers the Winter Hiking Program. Since I have been involved with the program in one way or another for many years I may be biased 
but I believe that it is an excellent way of getting started in a fascinating activity.
Since we are all volunteers the price is remarkably low: $45 for AMC members ($50 for non-members) who register in advance. This gets you a fat manual, five evenings of classes (with snacks!!) and several free instructional day trips (trips with overnight accommodation obviously must charge for the accommodation!).
Let me STRONGLY recommend advance registration if you plan to attend. The lines can get pretty long if you decide to register at the door.
