Joined the hoards of humanity up the Ammo. Ravine trail on Sat 8/1. Trail mud was manageable, however some key rocks were slippery enough to give us pause about returning downward on it, since only 1 of our 4-person party had poles. Waterfall crossings were all fine and as you went higher and the sun had more chance to dry the surfaces, so they were better than anticipated. Bugs began about halfway up but really not bad.

Because we got at late start, however (1 pm), no time to bag Monroe or Washington. Went up Crawford, where there was more standing water than usual but fine, to Westside, to Gulfside, and then down Jewell, including 90 min wearing headlamps. Jewell was amazingly free of mud except in the real lower sections and even that was navigable.

Spectacular views, even despite oncoming haze. Perfect choice of safe, easily navigable trek for us, at least, given recent rains. Caught a sunset AND a harvest moon that really helped light our way for quite a while on this west-facing slope. Great fun walking underneath the Cog railway on Westside, and following the trains chug up and down. The 15-year old autistic wonderboys did phenomenally and even though we didn't bag a peak this time, those views - and our sons ever-expanding capabilities - were totally worth it.

Special Equipment: Poles highly recommended. bug juice. camera.
