Any guesses as to what bug made these?

I saw them (LOTS of them) in the Middlesex Fells this morning. They're all about 1.5-2 inches around, mostly on low scrub. I've seen bug nests in the Fells before, but never in such numbers.

I think they are webs woven by spiders. I've never looked close enough, though.
They look like tiny upside-down parachutes - sometimes in grass, or shrubs, or even in leaf litter.

Would there really be that many?

Well, I'm happy if they aren't going to turn into incubators for something that will devour the Fells.

But I"m also kind creeped out at the thought of such large numbers of spiders

(i don't know which one this is, but those are indeed spiders' webs.)

I saw a similar scene on Ashokan High Point last fall after a cool night...There were spider webs all over the place covered w/ dew..Just like the pics they were in bushes and small trees

It's better that they are spiders than most other beasties. Long live the tiny carnivores! Come on, just taste that tick, you'll like it!
