Anybody Ever Ski Waumbek?

It's been a few years since I ventured to Mt. Waumbek, and from what I recall it was a yawningly easy hike. Anybody ever ski it?

What are the trail conditions like around that area? Is it too soon for slapping the skis on?

Waumbek

Been on skis once in my life (15 years old, stoned and drunk - wonder why i did not get the hang of it??) anyways - I would say that Waumbek is very skiable, particularly from Starr King down to the parking area. Between Starr King and Waumbek is pretty gentle and meandering.

I didn't ski Waumbek but when I hiked it last week we saw skiers on the ridge between Starr King & Waumbek who had skinned up. I did not see them coming down, but the grades are mild and the woods are open along much of the route.

Conditions were fine last Wednesday...I have no idea how they might have changed in the last week.

Snow was still deep and well-packed on Saturday (as was the trail to Mt Martha on Monday).

I know of at least 2 who have skied Waumbek: el-bagr and his wife Olivia. El-bagr is the only person that I know of who also has skied the NH48!

Spending nearly a week with these two as part of a group last winter on a ski traverse of Baxter State Park is a memory that I will not soon forget. Besides being excellent skiers, they are great people

SherpaK, you're a sweetheart. Olivia and I were thinking of you earlier this week as we hauled Beast-like sleds around Zealand Notch -- TR to follow. Folks, SherpaK is a better backcountry skier than he lets on -- and if you want to be impressed, just ask him about ski jumping.

Dug, Olivia and I skied Waumbek on 12/31/04. Conditions were fine at that time -- plenty of snow once you got a mile or so in. Not sure how this year's shaping up, but FWIW this week we observed much more snow in the Twin Mountain area than over in Glen.
