They have not been saved yet. This is more like saying 'we will not actively take them down'. No money or bodies have been allocated to the restoration yet. In the meantime, they continue to slowly rust.

Don't get me wrong, I will help if I can, but we are a long way from the goal.

That's great news, will have to take the kids up Hurricane next time we are in the area.

Fantastic news for those concerned about the fate of the Hurricane and St Regis Mountain firetowers.

For those who support the removal of the towers, this news might not be so "fantastic," even though they still fall into the category of "concerned about the fate of the Hurricane and the St. Regis Mountain fire towers." The viewpoint that man made structures have no place in wilderness areas is a valid one, and it needs to be tempered respectfully against the viewpoint that historical and cultural artifacts are a legitimate aspect of the wilderness experience, which is also a valid viewpoint.

Agreed. This is not an actual "ruling" (not yet anyways) but rather a "draft plan." It still has to get through committee and then probably voted on an an APA meeting.

It will almost certainly take a lot of hard work (and money!) by members of the public to ensure that the towers are restored, especially during this period of fiscal uncertainty when state agencies like the DEC and the APA have less funding available.

I for, for one, and glad that the APA is taking steps towards allowing the fire towers to be restored. Of the three options that were available (restoring the towers, removing them, and allowing them to deteriorate), allowing the towers to deteriorate over the years was my least favorite.

Some more on the topic, another source.

Here's the link to the report in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise - at the end it says to check back for a longer article in Friday's paper.

Hat's off to all the fire tower supporters, public hearing speakers, and letter writers - it looks like they listened to us!

Hi All,

The APA passed a resolution today to allow our towers remain. Everything is not a done deal yet but this is the main and most important first step. From here our governor has to approve the re-classification, we will then have another public comment period and hearing with DEC to develop their policy and that has to be approved.

I am sure I will be in touch soon again, but please check all the press possible for a more information. Myself, Pat and Tom Willis, Sandy Hundredth, Scottie Adams as well as Stub Longware were all interviewed by 3 papers, one radio station, and WCAX Channel 3 out of Burlington. I personally was interviewed by WCAX for about 10 minutes so I hope we get some good press. I expect specifically there will be in-depth articles in tomorrow’s editions of the Press Republican and Adirondack Explorer.

Our next step as a group is to write our governor and encourage his quick approval of the APA's resolution, what we do not want is for Governor Patterson to sit on this and it have to wait for a new administration.

Any scanned versions of press reports / article or digital recording of TV reports will be appreciated. With Paul Hartmann's help I hope we can keep our website updated as much as possible with all of the anticipated press reports.
