MUD! MUD! MUD! (I know, this is summer, 2009.
From South Arm to Rt 17 (Old Blue, etc) most of the trail is mud. The first half from 17 to Maine Rt 4 is mercifully shy of mud, but just east of Sabbath Day Pond shelter, just east of the power line, and about a mile east of the power line the mud is calf-sucking deep. (My trekking pole went in over 2 feet without finding any bottom in the third listed wallow.)
Entire trail is well-blazed; great views from several outlooks!
Stayed at Gull Pond Lodge in Rangeley - Bob is a super host!
Shenanigans, Smiley, Hoosier Bob, Ruin all NoBos, Thunderbird a SoBo. Saw very few people in two days.
