What a great weekend! The Whites were a snowy paradise! Steven and I spent Friday and Saturday nights snugly and economically at Shapleigh Bunkhouse at Carter Notch. Saturday, accompanied by BigEarl and Jenn, we attempted Carter Dome……!? Nineteen Mile Trail was significantly damaged by the big recent storms and there were trees littering a meagerly packed down trail. It was almost immediately apparent that we were not going to get anywhere near Carter Dome, but the day was temperate (45 degrees) and the snow was exciting and beautiful to be traveling in. The group moved at approx. 1 mile per hour with all of the obstacles, but managed to reach the Carter Dome Trail before noon. The Carter Dome Trail had a lonely set of snowshoe tracks leading into the distance, so we followed them up about a mile before calling it quits and returning to the trail junction for lunch. As the sun warmed the snow on the trees it was almost eminent that each of us would be pelted from above. A chunk of snow actually knocked my sandwich from my hand! A quick return trip to the car was encouraged as BigEarl had invited us all for chili at Mooseland!
Sunday Steven and I went up Jackson. It was a great snowy hike. From the Jackson connector trail junction up it was a winter wonderland. The very top of Jackson was cloudy and windy, so our stay was brief. Within 20 mins of heading down the trail the sky opened up to a beautiful blue with great views – bummed we didn’t have them on top. The hike down was warm and sloppy.
As I was hiking this weekend I was thinking how nice it would be if VFTTers all had a pin or something to wear so others could identify them!
PS: I have great pictures from this weekend, but still need to set-up a site for them... How do I add an attachment?!
