Dense, heavy snow. Wet in spots, crossings open but easily passable. Trees covered with snow and shedding. Several new, huge blowdowns.

Snowshoes recommended, though plenty of barebooters on the trail. Will set up hard overnight. Winter-warmth waterproof gear.

Avalon Trail a well-packed highway to the A-Z junction and presumably to Avalon as I saw over 2 dozen people coming down but A-Z trail had seen only one snowshoer and I was the second. A few more barebooters followed and may have messed things up but I packed it as well as I could. Got almost up to the Tom junction before turnaround time and cold winds / dark clouds sent me back down. Crawford Notch wicked cold and windy. Estimate at least a foot of snow down low, over two feet up high.
