So yesterday was a quick jaunt up these 3 peaks. A nice morning hike if you will.
We started at 6:15am from AMC Center and peaked Avalon around 7:25. Nice little peak and well worth the effort of 1.8 miles for the views. Though that last .5 up is a little steeper than I thought it would be.
After relaxing for 10 minutes we made our way to Field which was an easy mile up. Peaked Field at 8:15 and a cold front of frigid Canadian air must have been working its way through the area right at that time as we broke out our winter gloves up there. Luckily the summit was wooded, or else we really would have been freezing and I didn't feel like breaking out my warmer gear. I was wondering what other hikers thought at this time if they were up on the higher peaks and ridges out in the open. The wind was damn cold. Definitely autumn coming. Took a 20 minute snack break up there.
We then headed across to Tom and peaked Tom at 9:15. That cold front must have blown through and out as it was back to beautiful weather atop. Stayed up there for a good 25 minutes enjoying the 2 viewpoints the peak has to offer. I especially enjoyed that point where the bench is with the view across to the Presidentials. Very cool outlook and all the way over to Cannon across the Pemi. Basically everything East, South and Southwest across the Pemi. While the other outlook gave views of more West and Northwest of the Twins and Zealand Hut and Hale, etc.... Much better views atop Tom than I had expected. I didn't think Tom had much for views all this time until I got up there.
On the way down, took the quick loop over to Pearl and Beecher Cascades. 2 pretty nice waterfalls really. Awesome how Beecher is almost a mini-gorge. A nice morning hike brought us back to our car by 11am. 3 peaks in less than 5 hours with 2 being 4,000's too.
My dad-in-law who I hike with doesn't care for hiking once the weather gets cold, so this was it for him this year. He is now done until May. So I had my cooler in my car with a couple of surprises for after the hike - a couple of Sam Adams Summer Ales on ice to toast another great hiking season with him. All in all we did 14 peaks, a bunch of waterfalls and other interesting hikes (Table Rock in Dixville for instance.) So this was a nice little trip to end the season with him.
