I used to walk up to the falls 15-20 times a year, and then the local inns and b&bs all started recommending this to their guests. It has gotten way overcrowded so I've cut back to 5-10 times a year in winter and shoulder seasons, like today. Hey, no problem, it's a great place for new or non-hikers to cut their teeth and see something nice without a lot of effort and little chance of getting into trouble. I still love this mellow walk. There's lots of history (the old copper mine, Bette Davis, Father Peckett's cabin) and a nice destination for days like this when there's not great visibility. Today was perfect. The parking lot was empty, you don't need a WMNF parking pass (I don't park there anyway), you don't need crampons, the trail wasn't muddy, the footbridge wasn't washed out, the old shelter I dearly love is still hanging in there (although the back right corner has lost its foundation stone), the falls were running good, I passed by some fiddleheads (aka barfweed) and didn't drop dead, there were nice trillium and other wildflowers out, I heard lots of warblers I couldn't identify singing, and the black flies weren't biting (yet). A great late afternoon walk.
See you again after Columbus Day!
