After doing the 3 Rounds a few weeks ago with JimC, we knew we'd be back soon to finish off this "straggler". Bag Pond Mtn is located north of Eustis ME and to the East of COP Snow.

The parking area & initial approach is the same as if you where doing the 100 Highest peak COP Snow. From the parking area at the end of the Penobscot Indian land road proceed N a 1/10 of a mile or so untill the ATV trail to Snow turns L and crosses a brook. You'll want to continue on straight ahead at this point staying on the old logging road N. The road will soon fork right and generally head NE towards Bag Pond Mtn. Shortly thereafter things got a bit confusing. The map shows a four way intersection where we wanted to go straight (NE). The road we where on actually bears left through this intersection while the other roads are overgrown and not obvious. We followed the wrong road for a bit before realizing our mistake.

Once back on track it was easy to follow the old overgrown road uphill untill it entered a flat open 'shelf' at approx 2200'. Here the open woods really opened up and it was not obvious where the road went. We angled left, diagionally across the flat, letting the terrain guide us. Eventually we picked up an obscure road on the other side.

We continued on up through the open woods. Our plan was to follow the road untill it reached the ridge at approx 2900'. The woods where so open that we eventually decided to just angle over to the left and cheat towards the peak. Good decision as the open woods made for easy 'whackin. We soon reached the ridge in a slight col where we turned left and followed it to the summit. We did encounter a thin band of not too thick spruce just before reaching the summit & jar.

The jar was rehung in the late '90's by DMS. The last entry was 2 years ago by Eric Schlimmer. This peak doesn't get much traffic! All in all this was a very easy bushwhack. Total time round trip... 4 hours.

We climbed it the way you did, at that time the register reported like 4 hikes the previous winter! Apparently somebody had snowshoed up the short way from Rte.27 and over the next couple of weeks several groups followed the tracks.

Sounds about right - July 1995 - we decided to beeline straight down on the descent onto an old road that passes through Delaware Gap - pleasant all the way. Down by the brook there was a moose Gathering area that smelled to high heaven.
