Bald Knob (Moultonborough) via Shannon Brook, Bald Knob Cutoff and Bald Knob trails March 31, 2012. Trail and vegetation dry with the exception of one muddy spot. At the pond we headed up Oak Ridge trail to the overlook and much of the western portion of that trail contained "phantom" mud pits (looks dry and solid, covered with leaves until you step on it and it sucks your boot into the abyss!).
Parked off of Route 171 - very few cars in the lot. Road to upper parking is closed until May 12, when website indicates it will be open weekends only until June. A group of walkers had lost someone's dog (apparently they were walking the dog for the owner) - brown and white with a pink leash, answers to the name of Jenny.
On the way to the car we decided to hike the Brook Walk, which is about 8/10 of a mile long with several spectacular waterfalls. Nice side trip!
