Could someone kindly explain the situation regarding the gate near the Berlin fish hatchery? I've called and can't get an answer. What are the typical hours and is the gate open on weekends?

I am climbing up on Sunday and am also curious about the Bunnell Notch Trail. The guidebook says it is difficult to follow?

Recent posts here have suggested it is pretty much always open. Also they have suggested if you call the hatchery, they'll either confirm this, or leave the gate unlocked for you.

For the last few years, the gate has been unlocked unless there has been vandalism in the area. On rare occasions the gate will be closed to appear as though it is locked but the lock is not snapped. Worse case is that the people who live in the houses opposite the gate have the keys.

I believe the fish have to be looked after 365/366 days a year

One of the workers told me the gate is always open well before 8 because the shift starts at 7:30 and the first person to arrive unlocks it if it was closed

One VFTT post said that since the road was repaved it can't be closed

The Bunnell Notch Trail used to be hard to follow (was abandoned for awhile) but with increased use it's getting better E of the notch, unless you're trail-bagging don't try it W

When we climbed Bunnell Notch, we had no trouble following the trail. It is well worn, although not well blazed.

Regarding the Fish Hatchery gate - the guy we talked to said they don't lock the gate if they see cars in the parking area at the trailhead. We checked in as a courtesy. The guy we talked to was friendly.

Enjoy the hike.

Also - sometimes the gate might be closed, but often is not locked. And if it is, the caretaker lives in the nearby house. As others have said - if you know there's a chance you might be coming out after hours, it's good form to look up one of the staff and let them know, but sometimes this isn't always possible. I've always found them extremely courteous and helpful.

Just chiming in to say that I have yet to find it locked.
