I spent most of the weekend in a Cosmology Symposium, using my brain, till it hurt!

Sunday morning, we ducked out a little early and met 'Flip' and 'xxx' :D for a short hike to Berlin Mt. This little peak is in NY, near the triple point with Massachusetts and Vermont. We started in Petersburg Pass, which is about 2000' high. You already have a great view of Greylock, and the Southern Greens and ADKs.

The path to Berlin is called the Taconic Crest Trail. It goes South from this point for almost 30 miles. Every 2 years, there is an end to end hike of this trail! You do get a patch if you finish this marathon! :D

Most of the trail we were on was heavily rutted, with either ATV or truck tracks. There were numerous large puddles in the trail that forced us (and the ATVs) to go around them and make new trails. In some places this has happened multiple times. There are signs at the trailhead that forbid motorized vehicles, and large boulders blocking the trail, but this does not seem to stop them! :( In spite of the conditions of the trail, we met no motorized vehicles.

Aside from what was underfoot, the scenery was pretty great. We could see the Catskills, Greens, Taconics, and perhaps the ADKs in the far North.

I'd seen references that said it was 2.7 miles to Berlin from the Pass, but we arrived in about 1:15, so I'm not sure that is correct. We did have to do several good pitches of elevation gain, and 'xxx' proved to be a very strong hiker, motoring up the steep sections and leaving us breathing heavily behind! :D

The 2800' summit is bare, and there are views in just about every direction, if you walk around the top. It was sunny, and there was a gentle breeze. It was probably about 60 degrees. A few people were there, but they soon left, and we had the place to ourself. We ate lunch, chatted and watched 2 gliders soar over Greylock. We also had a few ravens fly over a few times. With Flip's binoculars, we could see lots of interesting sights in the dsitance.

After hanging out for quite a while, we headed back. A few people were still heading up to the summit, but most of the people we met were doing short hikes from Petersburg Pass. Quite a few people park here and just hang out and enjoy the views, or take short strolls.

After the hike, we headed over to Brown's in Troy and enjoyed their excellent beer! :D

BTW, this is a Views and Brews hike, so now I can highly recommend it! :D

Tom,

The motorized travel people have been causing a real problem with much of the TCT for years. The issue is that the Trail traverses a long up-and-down ridge above private farm land, and the woods are open, gently-sloped, and the Trail is easy to access. Also, there are side trails and woods roads that access the hollows.

A good friend and I were hiking north out of Petersburg Pass 2 Aprils ago and we ran into an ATV user who was chewing the crap out of the newly thawing soil. When I walked up to him, he reached back and covered his license plate and told me to mind my own business unless I was carrying a badge and firearm. 3 more of his friends joined him and we got out of there before taking a beating.

I reported the incident to the local DEC Rangers. They are already aware of the problem, and picked up surveillance of the PP area, but as far as I'm aware, they've had little luck apprehending the ATV users.

The TCT is a gem, and if others feel strongly about it, the best thing you can do is report damage and active use to DEC so they can increase the law enforcement presence on the trail and access points.
Confiscate a couple of $5K ATVs coupled with large fines, and the word will get out quickly to the locals.

You and ME are lucky not to have encountered hordes of ATVs, as happened to me some years ago and to J & Co more recently

For other lists, Berlin Mtn was once a MA (!!) firetower peak and where the state line crosses SE of the peak is the HP of the boundary of both NY & MA

Or you could try to beat John Kirk who has completed 252 7% beers

Cool, another fire tower site visited and I didn't even know it! :D

Mohamed, I think the peak is technically in NY, correct, as I read it was the county high point for Rensselaer County (NY).

Wow, there is a list to check out! :D
