Big Ball Mountain via Mt. Shaw Trail, Tate Mountain Trail, Banana Trail

Date of Hike: Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Trail Conditions: Dry trail, wet trail, snow, ice

Special Equipment Required: Light traction in pack (barebooted)

Comments:

Mt. Shaw Trail to Tate Mountain Trail - wet in a few spots, but mostly good going.

Tate Mountain Trail - A few patches of ice (avoidable), snow starts around 1,500'. Trace to 2" of snow.

There are no water crossings via this route. I was able to clear all but two blowdowns (dropped one of said blowdowns to ground, so both remaining can be stepped over).

There is 2-4" of snow at the base of the Northern Ossipees (ie Route 25 corridor) - no snow at the base of the Western Ossipees (ie Route 171 corridor).

According to another hiker, there was about 4" of snow at the top of Mt. Shaw and traction was needed to get up the steep part of the Mt. Shaw Trail below the carriage road.
