Posted a car at Stratton Pond Brook Rd and was driven to Long Falls Dam Rd by Sue, proprietor of the Stratton Motel (at 0430 so we could get an early start).
Trail in excellent shape! I have to nominate the MATC for the best, most consistent trail maintenance and improvement program, at least on the AT, in New England.
From Long Falls Dam Rd to East Flagstaff Rd, gentle trail, good treadway. Up Little Bigelow well-laid-out and constructed. Fabulous Views!
Spring box above the Myron Avery Campsite and on the trail down to Horns Pond both had water, though the flow is down.
Going either N-S, as we did, or S-N, the downslopes will be the issue, but poles are helpful (necessary for us in our 60s).
After five days of scorching heat, Sunday was perfect - in the 60s, high overcast much of the morning. Early morning sunlight from viewpoints on Little Bigelow were spectacular. 360 degree views of Flagstaff Lake, Sugarloaf, etc., from Avery and West Peak made the day.
Thirty people (incl MATC Ridgerunner John), two dogs, 11 hours.
