You might have heard this guy singing. It is a bell like trill. There song is as common as the white throated sparrow through out the mountain region.

I just saw some in Washington State...same species but a very different look. The oregon and slate colored (what you have) subspecies was considered sperate species. Then afte DNA analysis they (AOU) lumped them all together making us go out and by more bird books.
